President Bush is sending his greetings to African-Americans who
start celebrating the seven-day festival of Kwanzaa Thursday.
Mr. Bush says Kwanzaa is a time to give thanks for the blessings
of family, community, and culture. He also says Kwanzaa promotes
mutual respect as Africans and African-Americans honor their
common heritage by celebrating their diverse backgrounds and
beliefs.
U.S. black cultural leader and professor Maulana Karenga founded
Kwanzaa in 1966. The name comes from the Swahili word meaning
"first fruits of the harvest." He based the seven-day festival on
what he called the seven principles of black culture, including
unity, creativity, and self-determination.
At first, relatively few Black American families observed
Kwanzaa, but participation has grown over the years. Today
analysts say more than 18 million people observe the holiday
worldwide.
From now until January first, celebrants will light one candle
each night for each of the seven principles.
