I seriously think that Kwanzaa actually constitutes an insult to ethnic
Africans and Spinnertjie's posts rub salt into the wound.

The festival of Kwanzaa was cooked up by an African American geek (Geek in a
personal sense - not as a generalisation or attempt at stereotyping) His
intention was to sow some sort of new age pseudo-africanised revival into
what he saw as a cultural vacuum amongst black people. Black people in
America had a big role in defining American culture as a whole, notably in
music. They also made an awesome contribution to world religion after they
sparked off the Charismatic renewal at a place called Azuza street. To
identify the American Black people as culturally deficient and therefore in
need of some ersatz creative assistance is quite a big denigration.

The Kwanzaa promoters have now issued forth into Africa, thinking that they
know more than the locals and that they will bless them with a cultural
event. There is an assumption that all black people are the same, which
results in the production of Swahili language copy for distribution in South
Africa. You can imagine how effective it would be if, as an English speaking
person I decided to send a message of affirmation to my white brethren in
Sweden using a message in Polish. I am sure that the Swedes would be
reassurred that I was sowing Polish into their cultural vacuum ( Maybe we
should use Denmark in the example as they are not and do not want to be part
of the EU.

The all knowing and supremely clever American has, true to form, assumed
that other people in the world do not have any culture and that he will
grant them access to his superior concoction. In this regard the Kwanzaa
ites are not behaving an a manner of African solidarity but are being
typical yanks (whatever the colour)

No wonder the local guys teach them to say "I will pay for all of the drinks
" when the Af Ams y arrive and want to learn some genuine African lingo.

Meanwhile, we will continue to appreciate Desmond Tutu's observations about
the rainbow nation and its many different (mainly black) cultures, despite
Spinnertjie making fun of him in another post.

Spinnertjie can keep trying to speak Swahili to the Zulu's or Hutu to
Mugabe's lot his message does not get through - They would not understand
him even if he addressed them in the common language of English.

Far as I can see, black South Africans don't give a fig for Kwanzaa.
Whitey's festive season is pay day, with folks queuing up for Krismis Box.
Haven't yet come across one dumb enough to ask a white man for Kwanzaa Box.

The City Council has outlawed Krismis Box, but I don't give a damn. The
guys on my street do a fine job all through the year, and my "thank you" by
way of a donation at Christmas is tradition. The council can go choke on its
turkey.

I asked at our multi-racial church on Christmas morning who had
heard of Kwanzaa. Seems only the white people. :-)
