I think you should venture beyond the tourist areas and into the barrios,
the urban ghettos in order to see the reality of life of most Dominicans.
The beaches are beautiful but the people even more so and I think you
will come away with a lot more from your visit if you venture outside the
tourist districts. Make an effort to get into the poorer areas which
lie on the outskirts of the big cities and spend a day at a colmado; I am
not suggesting a voyeuristic peep at Third World poverty, but if you want
to experience a culture you don't bypass its people; unfortunately the
tourist industry in the Dominican and the rest of the Majority World is
built around precisely that.
