LONDON, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Croatian striker Davor Suker, top
scorer at the 1998 World Cup, joined English premier league
runners-up Arsenal from Real Madrid on Monday.
The club, who reportedly paid $5.67 million for the
31-year-old, announced the four year deal at a news conference
attended by the player.
"During the World Cup he was outstanding for me...it was a
demonstration of how a striker should play because everything he
did was intelligent," said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who
defined Suker as a "real team player".
Suker was released by 1997-98 European champions Real Madrid
in May after falling out with coach John Toshack and Wenger said
the Croat had taken a pay cut to join Arsenal.
The striker has been in Spain since 1991, firstly with
Seville and then the last three years with Real.
Real are meanwhile expected to complete the signing of
Arsenal's 20-year-old French international striker Nicolas
Anelka, who has fallen out with the London club, this week in a
seven year deal worth around $35.30 million.
"The Davor deal was independent from the Anelka deal,"
Wenger said, who gave no financial details but said the Anelka
deal was "90 to 95 percent" done.
"The Anelka story for us is over," he said.
