Being one of the 'minority' I would say that darker hair seems to be more
common. Population on the South tends to have darker skin on the average
( climate, history of the area, I, guess) while the one on the North often
has somewhat pale skin color.
Myself, I'm from the South and am a freckled redhead who can't take summer
sun very well or, better, not at all.
Anyway, I don't know how would Portuguese, Southern French, Spanish,
Italian and Greeks answer such a question, since similar traits can be
observed there as well. Ultimately, I would attribute it to the
climate and early migration patterns from Asia ( you know, in those
days of Roman Empire).
