National games end in success
SHANGHAI -- Billed as the largest and most successful ever, the
Eighth National Games of China ended here yesterday with lots of
world, Asian and national record broken.
More than 7,500 athletes from 47 delegations took part in the
11-day competition, which features 28 medal events. Sports mavens
from the nation and avid fans witnessed top world level play in
table tennis, badminton and world record performances in swimming
and track and field.
Intense competition was everywhere, from the pool to the track,
from the courts to the lake. But the hottest topic is, like the
Beijing Games four years ago, the awesome Ma's Army: Liaoning
women's middle- and long-distance running team. Four years ago,
controversial coach Ma Junren's pupils Wang Junxia and Qu Yunxia
broke three world records in Beijing. Since then, there had been a
slump for the Ma's Army, although Wang -- who led an exodus from
Ma -- won the Olympic 10,000 metre title.
Incredible Ma Junren came to Shanghai with a new batch of young
runners and they were terrific. Ma's pupil Dong Yanmei led six
runners to run under the 31-minute mark. And 1,500 metre winner
Jiang Bo, also from Ma's camp, and Dong both beat the 5,000 metre
world record in the final by more than 8 seconds.
To host the Games, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government has
done all it can to ensure a big success, and they succeeded. More
than 4 million people came to see the Games competition, after a
grand opening ceremony dubbed by IOC Chairman Juan Antonio
Samaranch as one of the best he ever attended.
Yuan Weimin, China's deputy sports minister, said fair play was
prevalent thanks to great efforts from the respective delegations.
He also praised the doping control which located three drug
offenders and reiterated they would be punished.

Photo show -- A French photographer's solo exhibition "China on
the Border of Water," is running at Beijing Arts Museum.
The exhibition features dozens of photographs of ordinary Chinese
people who make their lives around water.
Elisabeth Souliac was first affected by China's water and rivers
on a plane to Shanghai in 1986. An esoteric Oriental philosophy
and old legends about water in Chinese life inspired her to begin
a one-woman trek around the country.
To her, water is just another side of documenting the lives of
ordinary Chinese people. She compiled stories and took photos en
route.
Souliac especially savoured the mausoleum of Dayu in Shaoxing.
Dayu was the first man to attempt flood control in China. In the
remote countryside and in some environmental preservation areas,
Souliac found ancient bridges. Here she noted how people's lives
formed a strong contrast with the fast-living style of modern
cities.
