As the statistics soar in the wake of Myanmar's cyclone disaster - 10,000

junta says it is "doing its best" to help survivors. But the generals admit
they do need outside help.
Could they have acted earlier? Weather forecasters in neighbouring India
claim they gave 48 hours notice that the cyclone was on its way.
International aid efforts are getting underway.
Richard Horsey of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs
said:
"Right now, food is not the emergency priority. Right now, water is much
more important and shelter, but we will have to assess in the coming days
and weeks what has been the impact on the food situation and make sure that
the food resources are sufficient."
The needs are immense. The UN estimates that several hundred thousand people
are without shelter and safe drinking water and the fear is that epidemics
could break out.
In areas worst hit by the storm, a constitutional referendum scheduled for
Saturday will now be delayed until later this month. But Myanmar's regime
will go ahead with the poll elsewhere, in a move the opposition party of
pro-democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi has denounced as "totally
unacceptable."

cyclone strike Myanmar yearly like clock work,..

The US knew days in advance hurricane Katrina would hit New Orleans
and US weather man warned of colossal disaster Yet Bush and the US

Myanmar is a third world country without the technology, without money

Economic sanction, to the degree that it is effective, is also
blocking economic developement. Given the people aid is like given
them fish. Contributing to economic developement is like teaching them
how to fish. The same on the human rights issues. One can speak out
for them. Or one can help out in economic developement. More
productive and resourceful people would then fight for their own
rights or whatever they see fit.

That is the question. Removing dictators is a very dangerous task. The
Filipinos used "people power" to remove Marcos. When the Burmese tried it,
many thousands died.

The BBC journalist who toured the delta area found
packages of aid with China and India markings being
distributed. She took picture of China aid being
handed out.
Only western aid were frist held at the airport, when
they refused to hand over to local aid workers,...
insisting that visa be issued to foreign aid workers
who came with the aid without visa. They were
sent away.
The aid were eventually handed over to local aid
workers and distributed.

any aid...because they lived in area OUTSIDE the
disaster area. 90% of Myanmar is NOT affected...
and they don't need aid.
In fact only the delta area south west of Rangoon
along the path of the cyclone was affected and
only COASTAL villages were affected by the 4 metres
tidal wave.

The junta is not equipped to handle the
tragedy. Aid groups from all over the world have been saying this. Are you

He said there were signs that Burma might accept a compromise brokered by
Asian intermediaries to allow more foreign help, including allowing Western

coming days by the Asian leaders, by the UN secretary-general, achieve. I
think you're going to see quite dramatic steps by the Burmese to open up," he
told the BBC.
Lord Malloch-Brown says only about 25% of the cyclone's most needy victims
have received the help they need. On Saturday, Burma took foreign diplomats
on a helicopter tour of the Irrawaddy Delta. But Shari Villarosa, the top US

an ideal democracy...Like the USA, it is with
numerous flaws.
I want you to confirm the USA is as bad as

The real power do not rest with the people...it is with
the special interests groups and the media. For
example, the average Americans want changes in
the social security program....No it cannot be done..
because ......the special interests group block it...
Americans want health insurance for the 45 millions
who are without insurance cover.....No it cannot be
done....special interests block it.......and so on...
The USA is under a dictator ship...the special interests
group and the media...They are the real rulers in the USA...
not the man in the White House.
The USA is trapped in a time warp..totally paralysed ..
unable to make any changes for the better.....

The funny thing (or tragic thing) is that much of your criticism of democracy
is valid.
The rich and powerful have too much influence in democratic countries.
But the rich and powerful have even more influence in non-democratic
countries because the poor there lack the vote and other democratic
institutions, which provide some protection.

I did not compare one to the other.
I brought up Athens to show that democracy is an evolving concept.
And I can't confirm the accuracy of your statements because both are false.

It is logical to say that the lack of sufficient aid workers, foreign
and domestic, would make the job of saving the people more difficult.
However, the impact of the small number of foerign aid workers is
difficult to guage. One thing neither America nor any other western
countries had promised is something like: "Let us in and we will save
X number of people." Otherwise, they will have better ground to
criticize the Myanmaran government for forbidding the entrance of
foreign aid workers. As is, they have no ground for complaint at all.
It is the Myanmaran's government's judgement on whether the presence
of such foreign aid workers would help or hinder any effort in helping
the people.
It is totally nonsensical to say that the Myamaran government had
caused the 70,000 death and 50,000 to be missing. No one had yet to
lay out the condition that the 70000 and 50000 people would not have
been dead or remain missing.

It was the Burmese government's judgement that for some reason they
did not want to accept foreign aid workers. Was it because they felt
they didn't need it? If so, then they are stupid, because of course it
could have helped. Or was it because they have something to hide? This
is far more likely, and it shows that they care more about covering
their own asses than the lives of their people. This is pretty damn
obvious, even though people like LT Lee insist otherwise

flawed.

Look at the huge mess in Taiwan...created by democracy. look
at Iraq...look at E Timor......
