I think food price inflation in China is serious albeit I have no idea
how inflation is like in the food sector in the US or Canada. With my
limited knowledge in economics, I would guess either food prices were
compressed for a long time due to whatever reasons
and are now springing up, or the future supply is going to increase in
response to the current higher prices and in doing so make them go
down again.

Inflation takes place when too much money is chasing too few goods.
So is the government in China printing out far more paper money than
is justified by its productivity?

Didn't you say you have undergrad and graduate degrees in economics?
Since you are also living in China, I'd think you should have first
hand knowledge of what is going on inside China. Why don't you spend
some time in the market places, vegetable stands, and do a little bit
of observation of what, why and how on conditions inside China for us
and post them on SCC.

Forget oil, the new global crisis is food

http://www.financialpost.com/story.html?id=213343

BMO strategist Donald Coxe warns credit crunch and soaring oil prices
will pale in comparison to looming catastrophe

A new crisis is emerging, a global food catastrophe that will reach
further and be more crippling than anything the world has ever seen.
The credit crunch and the reverberations of soaring oil prices around
the world will pale in comparison to what is about to transpire,
Donald Coxe, global portfolio strategist at BMO Financial Group said
at the Empire Club's 14th annual investment outlook in Toronto on
Thursday.

"It's not a matter of if, but when," he warned investors. "It's going
to hit this year hard."

Mr. Coxe said the sharp rise in raw food prices in the past year will
intensify in the next few years amid increased demand for meat and
dairy products from the growing middle classes of countries such as
China and India as well as heavy demand from the biofuels industry.

"The greatest challenge to the world is not US$100 oil; it's getting
enough food so that the new middle class can eat the way our middle
class does, and that means we've got to expand food output
dramatically," he said.

Here're couple observations:

In China - most recent trip was not able to find the yummy 1 yuan
little sausages in Shenzhen. Good news is people are eating inside
more often, and there are successful chain-restaurants offering
Chinese street fares like noodle and dumpling.

In US - was shocked to find out McDonalds have doubled Value Meal from
$3.25 to $6.50. Good news is Red Roin's $9 Burger sounds a lot better.

Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise.

More people are going to eat more veg than meat and will become
healthier. Less pressure will thus be placed on the medical system.

I think the whole world is going through a frightening inflationary
era caused by the indiscriminating printing of fiat money by the US
empire.

By linking up RMB with fiat US money, China is importing a lot of
inflation which should have belonged to the US.

Without food ....

One can survive for a few weeks; water, a few days; air, a
few minutes. All three, are in short supply in China.

Particularly the latter two ....

Being truth or not is not an issue or at least not necessarily an
issue. I don't see any reason why I want to put up with impolite
interlocutors who speak with such a cheap diction.

This is a public Usenet forum, Buddy. Anyone can write whatever they
want about whatever they like. Once you shrink from answering
something, you show your personal weakness or ignorance on the subject
in discussion. Look around you, notice how many idiots there are
pretending they are experts in something or other? Some write so badly
it makes you laugh, while others write so goofily it makes you sick.
Show them all what you're made of and face the challenge.

Trying to be technical, eh?

Note well that whatever quality of air China has, she still
have lots of it. 21% of the atmosphere over China is still
oxygen. One cannot survive without air, but one can survive
a long, long time with just dirty air.

Likewise for water.

How long is a "long long time"? In the meanwhile, people are dying of
