American pollster Andrew Kohut, however, provided the evidence. In his
book "AMERICA AGAINST THE WORLD: How We Are Different And Why We Are
Disliked, he found that poll data indicated that Americans have a
disconnect of a major order. For example,"most people around the world
believe that America ignores their interests in making foreign policy,
yet 67 percent of Americans feels that the United States pays
attention ot the interests of other countries..." Yet Andrew Kohut did
not answer the qeustion why?
NYTimes coverage on the recent Shangri-La Dialogue shows why American
are disconnected from the rest of the world and from the reality.
In short, American govoernment promotes China Threat. It takes every
opportunity to
paint China's rise as a military theat to the world. During the
Shangri-La conference, America's China Threat theory was rebuffed
openly by Singapore's Prime Minster representing the mjority of Asian
nations in front of an international crowd of high
ranking officials. The following is from a Turkish paper:
http://www.anatoliantimes.com/hbr2.asp?id=&s=int&a=070601152318.3xlzl76g
"In a speech opening the Shangri-La Dialogue, Lee Hsien Loong also
urged the United States to stay the course in Iraq and warned of the
serious, long-term implications of global climate change.
Lee said Asia enjoys "warm ties" with China, which continues to
emphasise peaceful emergence and international integration.
"America and Japan have expressed concerns over China's military build-
up, and seek more information on China's defence spending and
intentions," Lee said.
"But most Asian countries assess the challenge from China to be more
economic than military."
Yet, the so called "Queen of American Free Press" failed to report the
Prime Minister's remark. The NYT's electronic edition has 4 entries on
"Shangri-La" on June 1st and 2nd.
Three articles are from Reuters and one from AP. None of them contains
Lee Hsien Loong statement emphasizing China is not considered a
military threat Is a major disagreement between America and a large
number of Asian countries not news worth
reporting? Of course, the news are significant. In fact, the rebuff is
significant in two ways. First, there is a major difference on whether
China is a military threat. Secondly, America's widely promoted view
is rebuffed openly and unceremonially by a tiny nation in front of an
international audience of high ranking officials. Yet, the New York
Times chooses not to report it.
Emeritus Professor Falk at the Princeton University, and the co-author
of "THE RECORD OF THE PAPER: How the New York Times Reports U.S.
Foreign Policy" , had once said,
"If one lived in Soviet Union and read the Pavda, it would be easy
for him to read between the lines and understood what the reality was.
But if you are in the United
States reading the New York Times, it would require a very sophicated
person to understand where the manipulation was and where the real
news." But sophiscated
readers may also have no chance in knowing the reality outside of
America.
Is American free press = American dumbing down press?
Non-sense. The American press is skewed to make America the shining
example to follow. In a way, the American press is the biggest
propagenda machinery in the world. It's job is to demonized the rest
of the world, and praise America as the goodness and godly example to
follow.

Do you need an answer? Just look at the Middle East problem. Israel
can do no wrong. It's always the Palestinians that cause the trouble.

It's a threat to America. America must look out for America's
interest, and no one else's.

The biggest defense is knowing the enemy well.

Because it didn't serve America's interest.

No, because it didn't serve America's interest.

Now, you know why America is hated throughout the world. We are a
self-centered nation. We are only concerned about ourself, no one
else.
>
> Is American free press = American dumbing down press?
No, American press serves the interest of America, and nowhere else.
American press is the biggest government propagenda machinery in the
world. It's job is to glorify America.
To be sure, no country is perfect. However, America and many Americans
like to see themselves as "the city on the hill." It/they want other
counries to follow American way and/or remake other countries into
America's image. But then, America needs to demonstrate itself as the
shinning on the hill. Not a bunch of disconnected people dumbed down
and misled evry which way possible.
The promise of the free press is that the press will upgrade the
quality of the citizens and informed citizens will in return demand
high quality press. However, this is not the case. Rather the free
press contributes to or the main force behind the downward spiral:
poor and biased press coverages lead to dumbed down citizens who in
term accept ever lower quality press.
That's funny, every country likes to portray themselves as the "city
on the hill". The above post still applies to every country.

To have a free press is to decide for onself what's to be believed.
Don't blame the press for people's idiocy. Long before there was a
press people were idiots.
What other country demand America and etc to follow its path?
For instance, China does not say America must have political reform.
Can you say the same about America? Does America not saying China
needs to have political reform?

Do you think NYT not reporting the rebuff by Singapore's Prime
Minister over
America's China threat theory the right way to report the issue?
Simple answer: they don't have to listen to any demands.
>
> Do you think NYT not reporting the rebuff by Singapore's Prime

> America's China threat theory the right way to report the issue?
The NYT is a rag. They have never published a story that isn't slanted
towards an agenda. The only use for NYT is for the bottom of a bird
cage.
>Is American free press = American dumbing down press?
This is a consequence of trhe consolidation of media ownership of the
newspapers, news magazines, the TV and radio stations and other
sources of news delivery. No journalist dares to be too independent
and certainly his editors do not dare to offend the advertizers. The
advertizers of course dare not go against the prevailing [p8ublic
opinion no matter how unjustified that opinion is. Think christian
fundamentalism, abortion, race, gay rights and the subjects that the
newspapers avoid unless some public figure says something that they
can report without taking a stand. People, and not only Americans
receive their news from TV sound bites these days and few if any ever
read thoughtful articles on anything.
The issue is not whether other countries like China have to listen to.
The issue is wether America is peculiar in making the demand and
whether
America and Americans are having the illusion that America is indeed
"a
shinny city on the hill."

Why is NYT such a rag?
Or do you mean all American press are similar rags?
In addition, don't you see such reportings, beiseding dumbing donw
American citizens, is eroding American power, as well as huring
humanity.
Good point.
The focus of the 4 articles, two of them are basically identical, are
still
about China threat. The miltitary industrial complex would certaintly
benefit
from China threat.

Please don't put words in my mouth. I said THE NEW YORK TIMES IS A
RAG. I did NOT say that all American press are similar rags.
If anyone is dumbed down by the press, then it's their own damn fault.
There is way too much "victim" mentality all over the world.
Oh yeah, that must be it. I bet you see gollywoggles under your bed
too.
Agreed...but the difference is that not many people in the world trust
what their givernment say while in the US many think they are the
holders of truth propagated by the American news medium.
I don't know if you live in the US, but you'd be surprised how many
people here don't believe a word our gov't or press says.

Didn't you know, lecher dog, only money talk in the U.S.A. No money,
no talk. When you have no money, the U.S.A. is just as bad as any
other.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, lecher dog worships the U.S. like a god.
Only the U.S.A. don't want any part of lecher dog. lecher dog would
be treated like a terrorist if he lands on the U.S.

I lived in the US during the Vietnam War era. That was the time they
began to wake up to the fact that many things shown in Hollywood
movies were not true.
Too many Americans want to be scared about things that aren't scary and
ignore things that are.
That's what we get.
