Former Chilean Dictator Charged in Secret Killings

Santiago de Chile, October 28 (RHC)-- Former Chilean dictator Augusto
Pinochet has been charged with the murders of inmates at an infamous secret
jail. Chile's current president, Michelle Bachelet, was one of many
tortured at Villa Grimaldi -- where some 5000 prisoners passed through its
doors. Hundreds were disappeared from the prison and are now presumed dead.

Judge Alejandro Solis, speaking with reporters in Santiago de Chile on
Friday, said that he would have no further details until Monday, when
Pinochet will be "officially notified." The judge would not say whether he
would issue a warrant for Pinochet's arrest. Solis charged that Pinochet
was responsible in at least 36 cases of "forced disappearances," one murder
and 23 cases of torture committed in the jail.

The human rights case involves tortures committed at Villa Grimaldi, a
secret jail where both Bachelet and her mother were also tortured. Villa
Grimaldi was a torture center from 1973 until 1978 and was run by
Pinochet's feared secret police, the DINA. Army General Augusto Pinochet
overthrew the constitutionally-elected government of Salvador Allende in
September 1973.

In related news, another Chilean judge said he is investigating the
authenticity of documents showing Pinochet had stashed nine tons of gold in
Hong Kong at HSBC bank, which maintains the documents are false. And the
former Chilean dictator -- who is under house arrest in his Santiago
mansion -- is also under investigation for tax evasion and fraud following
the discovery of previously undeclared bank accounts in the United States.
British banking giant HSBC has announced that documents published in Chile
showing Pinochet had a huge gold deposit in its Hong Kong bank were false.
However, Judge Juan Gonzalez said Friday the probe would continue despite
HSBC's denial.

The judge told reporters: "We are going to press on with the information
gathering despite what the bank's representative has said. Determining how
all of this came about would also be one of the investigation's goals (and)
finding out who is behind this supposed falsification."

The documents say Pinochet's deposit was worth 160 million dollars. Other
sources said the deposit was worth 190 million dollars in today's market.
The records, provided by U.S. gold dealer Al Landry, bear the seals of
Schell Security GMBH, which certifies such transactions.
