Visiting nearby Carmel, California, a few weeks ago, I came upon a huge piece
of carved sandstone, formerly a cornerpiece at the Preah Keo temple complex --
or so the label said. It was a rather worn, Bayonne style, naga head, fresh
hack-marks visible on the reverse. Catalog number: EYYYW53012.

I asked one of the proprietors if he could authenticate the piece, for which he
was asking US$7500, and he said yes, he could provide full documentation of
authenticity. I asked if he got many pieces like this from Cambodia, and he
started to dodge my questions.

I do not know exactly who to report this to, although I highly suspect the piece
was stolen. I hope someone reading this *will* know where to report it.

The store is called Conway of Asia, and is located at the following address:

P.O. Box 55
Carmel, CA 93921

UPS: Dolores between Ocean and 7th, Carmel, CA

tel.(408) 624-3643
fax.(408) 624-0789

Please do be a little cautious and don't flood them with hate mail; the piece
might very well have resided in France for a hundred years, rather than having
been recently looted from Preah Keo. But if you're in the area, or are
interested in finding out more about the piece, I encourage you to contact them.
The proprietors are George Mederos and Peterson Conway VII & Sons.

Patton--

There is a program called ObjectID to fight arch theft run by the Getty
Foundation, conveniently in LA. I just found the web site at
http://www.ahip.getty.edu/pco/
e-mail obje...@getty.com

It looks like the spot. They explain how to document and report such
items. Let me know if things turn out interesting!
