Y ANGON, 8 Sept- The following is the. Opening Address by Chairman of the EFA
Coordinating Committee and Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l
of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt on the occasion of
the Commemoration of International Literacy, Day at Yangon University Diamond
Jubilee Hall, today.
Ministers, Excellencies, Heads of Department, Resident Representatives of
UN Agencies, specially invited guests,
- the development of advanced science and technology that will make effective
contribution to the construction of a modern and developed nation
- for all nationals not only to be literate but also possess a high standard
for education
-to train and develop in tellectuals and experts who will contribute to the

then viewed the exhibits.

(2) Secretary l accepts cash donated for Ministry of Education
YANGON, 8 Sept-A ceremony to donate cash to the Ministry of Education was held
in Yangon University Diamond Jubilee Hall on Pyay Road this morning, and
Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and
Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony and accepted the
cash.
Present also were Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Home
Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National
Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Culture U Win Sein,

Rector of Yangon Institute of Education U Han Tin presented K 600,000 and
Dr Tin Htwe and wife Dr Thida Wai ot l huta Enterprise presented K 900,000
respectively for construction of a building for the bookshop of Yangon
Institute of Education.
U Aung Shwe and wife Daw Mya Mya Lin of Fantasy World Family presented one
million kyats for construction of basic education school buildings.
Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt accepted the donations.

(3) Minister receives Heir Apparent of Tonga
YANGON, 8 Sept- Minister at the Chairman of the Office of State Peace and
Development Council Brig-Gen Abel received Heir Apparent of Tonga HRH Tupouto'a
and party at his office at 3 pm today.
They cordially discussed cooperation and friendly relations between the two
countries.
Present were Director-General of Foreign Economic Relations Department U
Soe Lin, Adviser to the National AFTA Unit Dr Khin Ohn Thant and officials.

(4) More USDA delegates continue arriving
YANGON, 8 Sept-Delegates and outstanding students arrived here today to attend
the 1998 annual general meeting of the Union Solidarity and Development
Association.
The delegates are from Kayah State USDA led by EC member Daw Hnin Hnin
Kyaw, Chin State USDA led by Secretary U Aung Min, Rakhine State USDA led by
Secretary U Oo Kyaw Yin and Taninthayi Division USDA led Secretary U Kyaw Kyaw
Htay.
The delegates were welcomed at the airport by Chairman of Welcoming
Committee Deputy General Manager (Commercial) of Myanma Airways U Phone Maung,
Secretary of Mingaladon Township Peace and Development Council U Myo Nyunt, EC
member of Mingaladon Township USDA U Swe Aung, Township Education Officer U
Htwe Phyu, Assistant Manager (Transport) of Myanma Airways U Aung Soe, USDA
members, Red Cross Brigade members and students.
They were accommodated at the hostels.
Bago delegates
Delegates of Bago Division USDA stopped over at Mingala Hall in Hlegu
Township. They were welcomed by EC member of Yangon Division USDA U Tin Maung
Win, USDA members, officials and students.
The delegates were then taken to Union Solidarity and Development Training
School in Hmawby.
Sagaing delegates
Altogether 49 delegates of Sagaing Division USDA arrived here by train this
morning.
They were welcomed at Yangon Central Railway Station by Managing Director
of U Kyaw Hsan. Chairman of Welcoming Committee General Manager (Commercial) of
MR U Kyi Aye, Deputy General Manager of MR U Tun Aung Thin, Chairman of Mingala
Taungnyunt Peace and Development Council U Hla Myint Secretary of Town member
U Zaw Lin and officials.
They were taken to Hmawby and accommodated at the hostels.

(5) Indonesia Embassy donates 300 copies of Indonesia Today to IPRD
YANGON, 8 Sept- A ceremony to donate 300 copies of Indonesia Today magazine Vol
3 No 10 for libraries of Information and Public Relations Department, Ministry
of Information, was held at the Head Office of IPRD on Pansodan Street this
morning.
Present were Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein,
Director-General U Chit Naing of IPRD, officials and Ambassador of Indonesia
Maj-Gen A Poerwanto Lenggono.
The ambassador explained the purpose of the donation and presented the
books to the deputy minister who thanked him.

(6) Construction of irrigration canals inspected
YANGON, 8 Sept-Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council
Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Staff Officer Grade I Lt-Col
Maung Win, Director U Thein Lwin of Mandalay Division Irrigation Department and
officials inspected construction of canals of Sedawgyi Dam for irrigation
nearby villages in Madaya Township on 6 September.
The commander and party inspected laying of pipe in the canals, digging of
canals and progress of work and gave instructions on completion in time and
requirements.

(7) Flash Solo Exhibition
YANGON, 8 Sept Thirty-nine water colour and 28 oil paintings are being
displayed at Flash Solo Exhibition opened today at the Art Showroom of Myanmar
Traditional Artsists and Artisans Asiayon.
Members of Library, Museum and Exhibition Supervisory Committee visited the
art show where works of artist Bagyi Thein Myint are being displayed till 18
September.

(8) Myeik to produce 100,000 quality pearls
Y ANGON, 8 Sept-Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint inspected mining
enterprises, Myeik Industrial Zone and pearl culture in Taninthayi Division
from 4 to 8 September.
Accompanied by Managing, Director of No 2 Mining Enterprise U Tin Win,
Managing Director of Myanmar Pearl Enterprise U Win Maung and Senior Engineer
of Project and Inspection Department U Myint Kyi, the minister met Chairman of
Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Coastal Region
Command Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung in Myeik.
Discussions focused on regional development and the mining sector.
The minister, who is also a member of Myanma Industrial Development
Committee, together with Deputy Commander Col Tin Latt and Chairman of Myeik
District Peace and Development Council Chairman of Myeik Industrial Zone
Supervisory Committee Lt-Col Than Htay, inspected a fish meal factory, a cold
storage. a prawn packaging factory, an ice factory and a lobster farm.
In Paleyadana Hall. he met local industrialists, explaining the aims in
setting up industrial zones. Local industrialists should strive to manufacture
quality finished goods and to upgrade the quality of import substitute goods to
reach export quality level, he said.
During meeting with staff of MPE and Geological Survey and Mineral
Exploration Department, he explained current political conditions and the
government's efforts to uplift welfare of service personnel. They should have
loyalty and goodwill and should bc thrifty in conducting work, he said.
On 6 September, he visited a farm of Ocean Pearl Culture and Production and
inspected production plans for officials 1 998-99 and 1 999-2000 of the local
joint-venture company.
On Pale Island, he inspected mother of pearl breeding station of Atlantic
Company, a joint-venture of MPE.
Yesterday morning, he observed process of culture at Letsutaw farm, another
JVC of MPE.
During inspection of the farms, the minister stressed the need to produce
over 100,000 quality pearls within a five-year plan, to conduct research on MOP
systematically, to find means to reduce MOP mortality rate and to produce farm
equipment with local materials.

(9) Minister for Transport leaves for Singapore
YANGON, 8 Sept- A Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin
Ngwe left here by air this morning to attend the Fourth Meeting of ASEAN
Transport Ministers in Singapore on 9 and 10 September.
Minister Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and party were seen off at Yangon International
Airport by Minister at the Office of Prime Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister
for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, officials of the Singapore Embassy, Deputy
Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint directors-general and managing
directors of departments and enterprises and families of the delegation
members.
PSO Capt Zaw Myo together with the minister also left for Singapore.

(10) Billboard hailing AGM of USDA put up in Mon State
YANGON, 8 Sept- As a gesture hailing the Annual General Meeting (1998) of the
Union Solidarity and Development Association, a billboard was put up in front
of Mawrawady Park in Mon State on 7 September morning.
Present were Patron of Mon State Union Solidarity and Development
Association Commander of South East Command Brig-Gen Myint Aung, Commander of
Mawrawady Naval Region Command Headquarters Captain Thein Ngwe, departmental
officials, the secretary and members of Mon State USDA, members of Auxiliary
Fire Brigade and Red Cross and students totalling about 3,500.
Secretary of Mon State USDA U Tin Soe Moe Naing formally unveiled the
billboard .
The commander met Mon State USDA members who will attend the Annual General
Meeting ( 1998) of USDA in Aung San Hall of the office of Mon State Peace
and Development Council.
The commander spoke and presented cash assistance to them.

(11) Myanmar delegation back from l2th Non-Aligned Movement Summit
YANGON, 8 Sept-Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw arrived back here via
Bangkok after attending the 1 2th Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Durban, South
Africa.
He was welcomed back at the Yangon International Airport by Minister for
Industry2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing,
Deputy Ministers for Foreign Affairs U Nyunt Swe and U Khin Maung Win, heads of
department and officials.
. Members of the delegation Director of Political Department of the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs U Phae Thann Oo, Deputy Director of International
Organizations and Economic Department of the Ministry U Hla Myint and PSO to
the minister U Zaw Myint Oo also arrived hack on the same flight.
Minister U Ohn Gyaw led the Myanmar delegation to the 12th Non-Aligned
Movement Summit and participated at the M inisterial-level Preparatory Meeting
and the Summit Meeting from 31 August to 3 September.
During his stay in Durban, U Ohn Gyaw met with Upited Nations
Secretary-General Mr Kofi Annan, Minister of State for External Affairs of
India Mrs Vasundhra Raj, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Mr
Anatoly Osel, and Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations Mr
Hisashi Owada separately.
The 12th Non-Aligned Movement Summit adopted the Final Document of the
Summit and the Durban Declaration for the New Millenium.
In his capacity as the leader of the Myanmar Delegation, U Ohn Gyaw
delivered an address in the General Debate of the Summit Meeting on 3
September.
