Khaing Khaing Maw looks forward to becoming world champion
She was born on 5th February 1979 in Hinthada and pursued her
education at No 3 Basic Education High School in Ahlon Township, No
20 Basic Education Primary School and No 1 BEHS in Hline Township.
In her childhood days, she was advised by her father to take part in
some athletic sports as she was unhealthy and had sloping shoulders
then. Accompanying her younger brother to the summer taikwando course,
she saw Taikkyi being played there and decided to attend the wushu
course. As she was able to show her outstanding ability in wushu, she,
representing Mon State, took part in the Wushu Competitions of the
National Sports Festival in 1994 and won third prize. At that time,
she was 14 years old.
At the National Sports Festival in 1997, she, representing the
Ministry of Forestry, entered the Wushu Competition and won gold
medal for the first time in double-blade sword competition. She won
silver in the taikkyichun competition of XIX SEA Games in 1997 and the
host, Indonesia won first prize. She stood ninth in the Fourth World
Wushu Championship held in Italy in 1997.
She won three gold - one in the taikkyichun competition, another in
the taikkyikyant competition and the third in combined event - in the
Second South East Asia Wushu Competitions hosted in Myanmar. She also
fetched three silver in Asia Wushu Championship held in Vietnam in
2000. Her rival senior wushu athletes from China and Hong Kong won
gold. She also took gold in the combined event of taikkyichun and
taikkyikyant in XXI SEA Games in 2001.
In spite of her ill health before the Asian Games-2002, she was eager
enough to bring gold to the country. True to a Buddhist, she practised
meditation to keep her mind calm, made a pledge to donate K 900,000
out of K 1 million, the cash award for the first prize, and entered
the competition. She enhanced the dignity of the country with her
winning gold by the total mark of 18.96 in the taikkyichun
competition. Taking the weaknesses of her rivals into account and
making a thorough assessment of them, she could make good use of
theirs.
Most of her achievements were thanks to President of Myanmar Wushu
Federation U Khin Maung Lay's encouragement and assistance that gave
her an opportunity to receive training in a 7-month camp in the
People's Republic of China. Khaing Khaing Maw said that sheis making
every endeavour to realize her dream of becoming a world wushu
champion.
