48-hour stoppage by signal workers, starting today. But the strike
could spread soon to supervisory staff, severely undermining services.

Two jockeys drowned when their car hit lobster pots and plunged into 10
feet of water in a Northumbrian harbour, after they had been guests of a
local pub licensee. One was Ridley Lamb, the Cheltenham Gold Cup

Mr Tony Blair stamped his authority on the Labour Party last night with
a blunt warning to the Left that it would not be able to turn the clock
back to the days when the party was last in power. In an attempt to win
back the many voters who defected to the Tories over the past 15 years,
he said he had a mandate to shed socialist dogma that had kept Labour
out of government.

Israel and Jordan yesterday ended their 46-year-old state of war and
opened the way for a full peace treaty. King Hussein of Jordan and the
Israeli Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin, signed a declaration on the
White House lawn which says: "The state of belligerency between Jordan
and Israel has been terminated.

Forces of the former Hutu government in Rwanda are adding to the misery
and despair of refugees in Zaire by dissuading them from going home
with scare stories of massacres by victorious Tutsi rebel forces.
Despite a 24-hour humanitarian airlift, the situation in Goma, where
more than a million refugees are living in squalor, is out of control.

Motor Racing:
============

Michael Schumacher is up in front of the world council this morning for
Overtaking Hill during the parade lap of the British Grand Prix, and
subsequently ignoring the black flag. Schumacher is facing either
disqualification from the British GP and or a 1 race ban. I also heard that
Damon Hill is also up before the council after stopping to pick up a Union Jack
after winning the race (dont they all do that ?), and Hakkanen and Barichello
are in trouble for crashing on the last corner, during the race.
