John Major has said that talks on Northern Ireland will continue
whatever Sinn Fein's response to the Downing Street Declaration. He was
speaking after a meeting at Downing Street with the Irish Premier,
Albert Reynolds. Mr Reynolds said the two governments were not going
to wait for Sinn Fein's response before seeking further all-party
talks. Both men renewed calls for a total cessation of violence.
Former Ministry of Defence director Gordon Foxley has been jailed for
four years for taking 1.3 million pounds in bribes from overseas arms
firms. A judge at Snaresbrook Crown Court told 69-year-old Foxley that
more than 1.5 million pounds of assets bought with the money would be
confiscated. This is Britain's biggest cash corruption case.
The Public Health Laboratory Service has confirmed a total of 15
cases since January of the deadly bacterium which eats human flesh.
Necrotising fascitis arises from Group A streptoccoci infection.
However, doctors emphasise that there is no question of the bug
sweeping the country. A woman died of the disease at a London hospital
on Tuesday.

President Clinton has announced that he is renewing China's Most
Favoured Nation trading status for another year. But the US President
said he was extending sanctions imposed after the Tiananmen Square
massacre in order to pressure China to improve its human rights record.
He said imports of Chinese weapons and ammunition would be restricted.
Mr Clinton also announced that trade and human rights would not in
future be linked.
Rwandan rebels have agreed to meet government forces to discuss a
ceasefire plan, according to the UN's special envoy in the country.
