Terrorists devastated the Israeli embassy in London with a huge car
bomb yesterday, injuring 14 people and leaving the Government
embarrassed by what was seen as a major security lapse. A woman was
able to drive a stolen car with 20-30lb of high explosives into
Kensington Palace Gardens, a street containing several embassies and a
royal palace and leave it yards from the embassy.

A second car bonb exploded early this am outside a building housing
Jewish organizations in north London, slightly injuring five people.
The three-storey Balfour House in the north London area of Finchley
suffered no apparent serious damage but had windows blown out in the
blast at midnight GMT. None of the 80 or so people who normally work in
the building were believed to be inside at the time.
Hospital staff said five people were treated for superficial injuries
or shock after the blast. Police said three of the victims were in a
passing car and one was a local resident.

Fresh peace talks aimed at ending the seven-week-old rail dispute are
to be held within the next 48 hours. Signal workers started their first
48-hour strike at noon yesterday.

Two detectives were found not guilty at the Old Bailey yesterday of
fabricating evidence against Winston Silcott, a man convicted and later
cleared of murdering Pc Keith Blakelock in the 1985 Broadwater Farm
riot.

In his first policy statement as Labour leader, Tony Blair called for
parental cooperation to enable at least 80 per cent of young people
to achieve high grades in GCSE core subjects. "School-home contracts"
should cover discipline, homework and truancy, he said.
