The Government is set to unveil its plans for the privatisation of the
Post Office, it has been claimed. The Union of Communication Workers
told Channel 4 News an announcement was "imminent", although the
Government has strongly denied this. Details of the plans, obtained by
the BBC, suggest the Government is to sell off 51 per cent of both
Parcelforce and the Royal Mail. Post Office Counters, which runs 19,000
sub-post offices, will stay in public hands, they suggest.
Two Catholic workmen have been shot dead and a third has been injured
in a shooting in north Belfast. The men were attacked as they sat in a
car near a building site. A lone gunman fired a number of shots from an
adjoining playground. The loyalist terrorist organisation the UVF said
it killed the man . In a follow-up police organisation a number of
people were arrested.

The US Federal Reserve has raised its key discount rate for the first
time in five years. The rise from three to 3.5 per cent is aimed at
controlling inflation and supporting economic growth.
Rwandan rebels have warned UN troops that they will be "treated as the
enemy and engaged" if they come between the two warring sides. The UN
approved a resolution authorising an increased force of 5,500
peacekeepers yesterday.
