UK News
-------
Plans to privatise the Post Office are set to be shelved by the Cabinet
today after a last-ditch compromise, in which only a minority of the
shares would be sold to the public, failed to win over rebel Tory
backbenchers last night. Mr Michael Heseltine will tell ministers that
the Government risks a Commons defeat at their hands if it tries to
sell a majority stake in the Royal Mail and Parcelforce.

Conservative MPs last night called for a police investigation into the
forged letter sent by the Guardian newspaper. The Commons also voted
overwhelmingly to summon its editor, Mr Peter Preston, to explain his
behaviour before the Privileges Committee.

At least two people were injured last night when a train hit the
buffers as it entered a station and mounted the platform. The accident
at Slough, Berks, at about 8.30 pm badly damaged one of the three
carriages of the Thames Turbo. Rescuers were delayed from entering the
carriages until they were made safe.

World News
----------
Three hostages threatened with execution by Kashmiri militants in India
were able to telephone their parents Tuesday night, after being rescued
in a shoot-out in which two policemen and a kidnaper died.

Cambodian officials confirmed yesterday that Mark Slater, 28, from
Corby, Northants, who was kidnaped by the Khmer Rouge, had been
murdered.

Seven Britons were among the 68 people who died when an American Eagle
plane crashed in bad weather near Chicago airport. Rescue workers said
that the nearly new Super ATR-72 high-wing twin engine propjet broke
into tiny pieces on impact and it will take weeks to recover all the
debris.

At least 350 people died yesterday when burning oil from an army fuel
depot that had been struck by lightning spread to an Egyptian village.
The fire, at Dronka, 250 miles south of Cairo, caused when fuel tanks
exploded, took 10 hours to bring under control.

This sounds fascinating. Can anyone shed some more light on this. What was
the forgery about? Has the Guardian commented?

Simon.
