Mr Major and Mr Albert Reynolds, the Irish Premier, will meet this week
to try to give new impetus to the Northern Ireland peace process in the
wake of Saturday night's massacre in Loughinisland. Six Roman Catholics
died when two gunmen from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force burst
into O'Toole's public house in Downpatrick, Co Down, and opened fire
on drinkers watching Ireland's World Cup win over Italy.

A babysitter who disappeared with her 18-month-old charge was being
sought by police and the boy's mother last night. Fiona McCorey walked
out of the Birmingham flat where she was staying after a row with
friends. She took the baby Andre Gordon, saying she wanted some air.
Miss McCorey, 22, has a 12-month son of her own, but West Midlands
police said he had been taken into care by the social services shortly
after his birth.

Rail passengers face the prospect of a third strike next week after a
leader of the signalmen's union gave warning last night that this
Wednesday's planned stoppage was likely to go ahead. The executive of
the Rail, Maritime and Transport workers is expected to give seven
days' notice of a stoppage next week to increase pressure on Railtrack
in the deadlocked pay dispute.

Hospitals will be given star gradings, similar to those used for
hotels, in performance league tables to be published in a fortnight.
Stars will be awarded from one to five in a series of categories
including the percentage of patients assessed, but not treated, within
five minutes of arrival in casualty, the Health Department said
yesterday.
