London's financial markets were thrown into further turmoil yesterday,
with persistent worries over inflation and interest rates sending share
prices plunging.
The Post Office announced record pre-tax profits of 306 million pounds
for 1993-94 yesterday when it increased the pressure on the Government
to privatise Royal Mail and Parcelforce.
The second one-day strike by rail signalmen is set to go ahead
tomorrow, after talks between Railtrack management and the RMT union
broke up without agreement overnight.

Twenty-five people died and seventy were wounded when a bomb exploded
in a crowded prayer hall in Iran's holy city of Mashhad yesterday.
Authorities blamed the opposition Mujahedeen Khalq, but the dissident
group denied involvement.
The American sports star O J Simpson made a brief court appearance in
Los Angeles yesterday to plead not guilty to charges that he murdered
his ex-wife, Nicole, and her male companion. Simpson, looking tired,
seemed not to understand the questions of the judge's clerk and was
prompted in his answers by his lawyer. Simpson has been under a
continuous suicide watch in the city's Men's Central Jail since
surrendering to police on Friday after an extraordinary 60-mile freeway
chase.
