The rail network will be halted from midnight tonight after talks aimed
at resolving a long-running dispute over the pay of 4,600 signalmen
collapsed in acrimony yesterday. Union leaders called for a 24 hour
strike, walking out of the talks after only seven minutes.
In the European elections Labour won 62 seats, the Tories 18, the Lib
Dems 2, Ulster parties 2, and the Scottish Nationalists won 2.
A small IRA bomb exploded yesterday outside Stevenage railway station
in Hertfordshire, close to the main line from King's Cross to Scotland.
No one was hurt and the track was not damaged, but the line was closed,
causing severe disruption. A second device was found nearby.
The Foreign Office dismissed as "gibberish" a claim by a member of the
Abu Nidal group - on trial for his life in Beirut - that he planted the
Lockerbie bomb.

Fears that North Korea is racing to produce nuclear weapons were
heightened yesterday by the Stalinist regime's announcement that it was
pulling out of the International Atomic Energy Agency and barring all
inspection of its nuclear facilities.
