UK News

The rail network is at a virtual standstill because of a 24-hour strike
over pay by signaling staff which began at midnight.
Rail union leader Jimmy Knapp has repeated his claim that the
Government intervened in pay talks. The RMT leader said Railtrack had
withdrawn a 5.7% pay offer for signal staff after pressure. But
Railtrack chairman Bob Horton denied any offer was tabled, or that the
Government had intervened.
Police investigating the rape of a 11-year-old girl have arrested a boy
aged 14.
Tottenham Hotspur are today considering an appeal against the heavy
penalties handed out by the FA yesterday. The North London club were
last night thrown out of the 1994-95 FA Cup, docked 12 points for next
season and fined 600,000 pounds. The punishment came after the FA found
Spurs guilty of financial irregularities.

The US is to present proposals for sanctions against North Korea over
its suspected nuclear weapons programme to the UN later today.
Former US President Jimmy Carter is in North Korea to try to resolve
the row over its nuclear programme.
Fighting has resumed in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, despite promises
by both sides that they would observe a ceasefire. Reporters said
mortars were being fired by both Government and rebel troops.

Foolowing a FA inquiry into financial irregularities spurs were order to pay
a #600,000 fine and the costs of the inquiry. Spurs were also banned from
taking part in next years FA cup, and will be deducted 12 points at the
begining of next session (BTW they avoided relagation by 4 points last season).
