Bangladesh Army wins over Ivorians

The following reports show how much Bangladesh Army contingents deployed in
Ivory Coast are popular and acceptable to the people of the divided country.
It is very interesting to note that the Bangladeshi soldiers are equally
popular and acceptable to the people and armed activities of both the
pro-government militias and the anti- government rebels. The reports
revealed the sentiment of the leading pro-government and anti-government
elements of the North and the South of Ivory Coast.
Maho R. Cyprien, the President of the Pro-government armed militia group
'The Young Patriot' while talking to the Bangladeshi media team at Guiglo, a
government controlled divisional town, spoke high of the Bangladesh Army.
He said, "From the very beginning we were expecting the arrival of the
Bangladeshi soldiers to Ivory Coast. We heard of their good service in
Sierra Leon." Highlighting the services of Bangladesh Army deployed at his
town he said, its image increase further. "We are extremely happy with them,
we want that they should stay back in our midst," he urged.
"We did not face any problem, so long Bangladeshi Contingents were deployed
in GUIGLO. We have no dispute with Bangladesh Army Personnel," Maho
informed.
Pointing to the differences of Bangladesh soldiers with those of others,
particularly with the French, The President of the Young Patriot said, the
LICORNE (French Army) used to take our women forcibly, Bangladeshi soldiers
never touched even the hands of our women. They never misbehaved with our
women." He said, "We are very grateful with the Bangladeshi soldiers, we
will work together for peace in Ivory Coast so long they will remain here."
When asked whether they heard the name of Bangladesh earlier, MAHO R.
Cyprien said we heard your name when its Army were deployed in Peace Keeping
Mission in African Countries.
Aug 05, Guiglo, (Ivory Coast) The Bangladesh media team called on the Mayor
of GUIGLO, M Mommy Soumattro at his office in the evening of August 5.
Welcoming the Bangladeshi journalists and columnists, the Mayor said, "The
door of our country remains opened for the Bangladeshis." "Please accept our
city as your own," he urged.
Talking to the media team, the Mayor spoke high of the Bangladesh Army
personnel deployed in GUIGLO.
It is to be mentioned that a contingent of 750 Bangladesh Army personnel
under BAN BAT-2 were deployed in GUIGLO in August 2004.
The Mayor said, "We are highly pleased with the performance of Bangladesh
Army. They worked so nice that our people treat them as brothers. They are a
part of our people. Please accept this city as your own. Our door remains
open for the Bangladeshis."
Commenting on the performances of Bangladesh Army, Mayor Mommy said, "They
are perfect and gentle. They are rendering good services to our nation at
least in three sectors." These sectors are, other than peacekeeping, health
service, repairing and cleaning. "We are getting these assistances many
other sectors." He said.
Pointing to the impartiality of the Bangladeshi soldiers, the Mayor said,
they capture the attackers irrespective of their ethnic and religious
affiliation. In one case they capture 85 attackers with two minor children,
he informed.
The Mayor said, "They construct and repair our roads in remote villages full
of jungle, clean our cities and remove garbage. They help us in every
possible way and set up schools and colleges," he informed.
"We are living in peace since they were deployed in our region, we saw
nothing indecent in them, except good services for us," the Mayor recalled
with appreciation.
"When they go to jungle to throw the garbage, they never disturb our women,
even any one of them is alone. We are gratitude to them," the Mayor said.
When asked to comment on the role of the Bangladesh Army in peacekeeping
mission, the Mayor said, "Their role is correct and positive. If they were
not deployed we would have faced a lot of problem and experienced even
bloodshed in our region. We are grateful to the Bangladeshi soldiers."
In replying to a question on people's sentiment about the Bangladesh Army
the Mayor said, " Common people are also happy with them. They say,
Bangladeshis are Muslims and there are many Muslims in Ivory Coast. But the
Bangladeshi soldiers are impartial. They do not do anything beyond the
rules, principles and instructions of UN."
"For all these reasons Bangladeshi soldiers are extremely popular among the
common people of Ivory Coast," the Mayor informed.
He asked the journalists to convey thanks to the people and government of
Bangladesh on his behalf.
The media team reached GUIGLO from Daloa on Thursday (noon), August 04 and
talked to two leading figure of the government-held southern town of Ivory
Coast. *

Leader of the DOZO ethnic group LACENI KONATE expressing his impression
about Bangladesh Army said,"We convey our thankfulness to the Bangladeshi
soldiers."
"We are grateful to them what they did for us since the beginning of the
civil war," he remembered.
"We have nothing so say against the Bangladeshi Army. We are happy with tem
as they work impartially. They maintain friendly relation with us. They are
very cooperative," the aged tribal leader informed.
When asked whether the DOZO tribe heard the name of Bangladesh earlier,
LACENE answered in affirmative.
"We heard the name of Bangladesh many years ago. People of that country are
Muslims. They say prayers saying Allah-hu-Akbar," he informed.
He said, "We are still alive due to their arrival of the Bangladeshi
soldiers, otherwise we would have been killed. They thwarted an attack of
the Pro-government elements who bid to capture our town on February 28,
2004." Loguale is a subdivisional town in the North portion of the rebel
control.
LACENE, along with his 24 followers talked to the media team in cordial
atmosphere. All of them shook hands with the media men saying
Assalamualaikum.
Media team reached 'Man' a rebel-held township, the one time capital of
North-Western Ivory Coast, is 124km from GUIGLO.
The Headquarters of BANBAT-3 is situated at Man and Loguale is a company
Headquarter under BANBAT-3.
SILIUUE ROMAN, the Sector Commander of 'Force Nouvelle', the rebel group,
that control the Northern portion of Ivory Coast, praising the role of
Bangladesh Army said, " They are playing a vital role n keeping peace in our
city.
"About one lakh people live in our city and their life is secured due to the
presence of Bangladesh Army deployed in Loguale," the rebel commander
admitted.
They are rendering good services to us by giving food, medical facilities
and security.
Expressing his deep shock at the departure of the First Mission of BANBAT-3,
the stout rebel leader said, " We feel pain at their departure of the
Bangladeshi forces."
He said, they are hard working and impartial; we hope the next team will
also be cooperative and help to us."
