On the same line.....(I fotget who wrote or where I read it).

Raja ashe, Raja jay
Lal jama gay, nil jama gay.
Rong bodlay, jama bodlay

Shudhu, Raja bodlay na.

This may not be verbatim, but some thing like this. If you know, fell free to correct.

This is like this (though a long one, but couldn't resist to quote the
whole). Smriti-theke uddhrito, kaaje-i bhul-er sombhobona prochur. Bhul
batle dile antorik-bhabe khushi hobo:

Raja ashe, jay
Raja bodlay
Neel jama gay
Laal jama gay
Ei raja ashe
Oi raja Jai.

Jama-kapoDed rong bodlay
Din bodlay na.
Gota prithibike gile khete chay
Shei je nangto chheleta
Kukurer sathe bhaat niye taar loDai
Cholchhe,cholbe.

Raja ashe jay,
Sudhu poshak-er rong bodlay,
Shudhu mukhosher dhong bodlay.

Pagla Meher Ali
Dui haate diye tali
Ei rastay, oi rastay-
Hashe aar oi gaan gay,
"Jhut hai, sab jhut hai."

Janoni jonmobhumi
Shob dekhe, shob shuneo
Ondho tumi
Shob jene shob bujheo
Bodhir tumi?
Tomar nangto chheleta je hoyechhe
Meher Ali.
Kukurer bhat keDe khay,
Dey kukur-kr haattali.
Tumi bodlao na,
She-o bodlay na.

Shudhu poshaak-er rong bodlay,
Shudhu mukhosh-er dhong bodlay.

Thanks to Sambit for appreciating the shift.

That is definitely true, the album of recitation by Salil Chowdhury
has few other nice ones. I liked another one called, "Sabder
Tikabhasya: Srimkhala, Bisrinkhala". If my memory was not rusted I
would have tried to share that with the group.

Thanks, I did not know the story behind that poetry. Actually once
Shankho Ghosh wrote a book giving the incidents behind few of his
poetries. Does anybody remember the name? Here is a short one. It is
regarding a student of Shankho Ghosh, Timir. Timir was killed in an
"encounter".

"TIMIR BISHAY-E DU TUKRO

(Andolan)

Maidan bhari hoy-e nam-ey kuasha-i
Digant-er dik-ey mil-iye jai routemarch
Tar majhkhaney pathey podey achhey o ki Krishnachuda?
Nichu hoye hatey tule ni-i
Tomar chhinno shir, Timir|"

Another one on similar theme:

"KICHHU-NA KICHHU CHHELEY

Amar-i book thekey jhalak
Palash chhutechhilo sedin
Loker-o lagchhilo bhalo-
Loker bhalo lagchhilo|

Lok-ey ki jenechhilo sedin
Ekhan-o baki achhey ar ke?

Asol-ey bhebechhilo sab-i
Udas Prokriti-r chhabi|

Tabu to dekh-o aj-o jhori
Kichhu-na thek-ey kichhu chheley

Tomar-i Central Jail-ey,
Tomar-i Curzon Park-e|"

Ditto.

I recall this chhora from the early 80's :

oi je dekhchho kaste
gola katbe aste aste

oi je dekhchho haturi
oder katoi na chhal chaturi

the third couplet which refers to the third item in the communists' flag containing the sickle, the hammer and the star, has unfortunately escaped my memory.
Could anyone post that?

Thanks,
Baidurya Bhattacharya.

is a cause. Those were the times of sheltered economy and big industrialists
were having it all there way at that time.

A gem of a crude hand-written scribble that was seen on the wall under
the Tollygunge railway bridge alongside colorful graffiti from the
ruling CPI-M before the 1990 Calcutta municipal elections:

"Jyoti kore desher khyoti"

Simplicity is a virtue!
