Mohun Bagan up for sale
In an effort to convert itself into a company the Mohan Bagan Club of
Calcutta has put itself up for sale. It will be renamed as Mohan Bagan
Athletic Club Ltd. and its 7,500 odd members will become shareholders
owning equity worth Rs 2.5 crore. The club secretary Mr. Anjan Mitra,
confirmed that Mohan Bagan is now registered as a company under section
25 of the Companies Act, 1956.

Agree with you 100%. As a Ghoti coming from generations of
businessmen this denegration of the "byabsha" by so called
"shikkhito" penpushers (now pushers of the keyboard) amazes
me . It goes a long way to explain why the miles of palaces
you mention which made Calcutta the second city of the Empire
(and it was based on Byabsha) are now decayed cesspits -
inhabited by "bastuhin" flotsam. The New Calcutta is growing
where the money is - and that will alsways be so. The "shikkhito"
ones should just read a few history books - Michelangelo was
possible becuase the Medici spent most of their time making money.
When I look around me in Calcutta, I find friends whose mothers
are Gujrati, fathers Bengali. My Punjabi friend married a Bengali
girl. My Marwari classmates writes short stories in Bengali. These
are the people who will build the New Calcutta, will run buisiness
and spend their money to make the city livable as a civilized place.
Not the grey, bastuhin inhabitants of the decayed palaces who will
always look upon them with envy.
Probably people who have left Calcutta are stuck in the 60s. Dada,
come and have a look. We have also evolved.

At the same time there were officials with the big three as well as
small clubs who spent a lot of money from their own pocket to get
things running, how long do you expect individuals to shell out
cash without getting any return whatsoever?

That probably is also not true, these days you do make a lot of money out
of several football tournaments, in itself it may not be enough for a big
club but things are much better these days. Unfortunately I don't really
have the exact figures with me, I recall reading it somewhere, if I get
hold of it once again I'll post the info. Also any national tournament
can be turned into a real money making affair by putting certain
infrastructure in place. Clubs, T.V, other media and
industries(interested and willing to invest money) should work in tandem,
the same way it works in USA and Europe. What we seriously need is a few
quality players, after all they are the one that everybody wants to see,
it's really sad that we don't have any footballer who can draw attention
to himself through performance, if we had someone like what
Tendulkar/Gavaskar/Kapil is to cricket, we could really sale him to
public/media/companies. When Tisco started Tata Football Academy I
seriously believed that we'd get quality footballers, who could carry and
elevate Indian football to the next century, unfortunately that didn't
happen. I am sure if we had a few more footballers these days like
Surojit Sengupta, Bhaskar Ganguly, Cheema, Majid Baskar, Subhas Bhowmik,
Sudhir Karmokar, Monoranjan Bhattacharya we'd be in much better shape.
These footballers had quality but the system was not in place when they
were the stars. Today everyone is more aware of how to sale games to
public, everyone knows how to channel money in through logos,
advertisement, TV rights, media hype etc. etc but unfortunately we don't
have the ones who will be the catalyst, the players themselves.

The sooner we realize that sports need money to survive the better off
we'd be. I am sure most of those 7500 members would like to see quality
football, success without caring who owns the club. If that's not the
case God can only help our sports. There is no point in being so
sentimental about tradition, we have to pour lots of money into our
sports, either through goverment(which unfortunately will not happen) or
through individual or companies, in the process we have to give in to
some extent, i.e attaching a new name to the club name, wearing
commercial logos along with club logos and all that sort of things.
This has been a nice discussion, thanks to everybody who participated.

Sudhir Kormokar played for MB in the year 1977. I do not remember
about 1978 (MB league champ), 1979 (MB league champ) and 1980 (League
cancelled ?). But he was in EB for 1981 (Md. Sporting league champ).

All I was trying to say that these things happen, you'll be surprised
to know that it can happen even when two teams are almost similar
in terms of strength, case in point -
a) 4 times premier league champion (out of last 5) Manchester United
was thrashed 0-5 by Newcastle United this year, this however didn't
prevent ManU from bouncing back and getting the premiership title.
b) Spain thrashing Denmark 5-1(?) in 1986 World Cup soccer, even
though Denmark was arguably a better side.
c) West Germay beat Hungary in World cup'54 final by 3-2 margin,
in the prelims however West Germany was thrashed by Hungary,
6-2 (I think)
d) Argentina thrashing Peru 6-0(or 6-1?) in 1978 WC, Peru was the
champion of group 4 in the prelims, Holland the eventual runners
up was 2nd, Peru had players like Tiofilo Kubilas, Ramon Quirego.
There are many many more examples, the most recent and surprising
was in NHL Western COnference final, in the 4th game Red Wings
beat Colorado Avalanche 6-0 and in the 5th game Avalanche beat
Red Wings 6-0, even though hockey is distinctly different from
football(soccer that is), the turn of performance from key players
along with some luck factors can do amazing things.
MB *was* not really at par with East Bengal in 1975, even though MB
showed a superior form in their league matchup against East Bengal which
they unfortunately lost 0-1, think about the EB players at that time,
Surojit Sengupta, Subhas Bhowmik, Shyam Thapa, Sudhir Karmokar,
Asoklal Banerji, Tarun Basu, Shyaml Ghosh, Goutam Sarkar(?), just
too much for Bhaskar Ganguly, Subrata Bhttacharya, Bijay Dikpati,
Nimai Goswami, Prasun Banerji and Co.
Anybody remembers the whole lineup? Unfortunately I was only 7 years
old, don't remember most of the stuff :-(
Bhaskar was only 19 years old at that time and think about what a great
goal keeper he turned out to be within next 2 years, case in point -
Bhaskar's superb performance against MB in 1977 league matchup which EB
won 2-0 but hats off to Bhaskar without whom we(EB) would have been
defeated hands(pants) down.

At the start of the season Prasanta Mitra was the first choice, Bhaskar
was only 19 years old at that time, unfortunately Prasanta Mitra
had some physical problem(haatu te jal jome giyechilo) which eventually
finished his career. As the season progressed Bhaskar started playing
more and by the time IFA shield started Bhaskar almost had to be the
first choice, that is not to say he wasn't good, everybody said at that
time Bhaskar had tremendous potential.

It's really hard to prove so, even though Argentina needed a margin of
more than 3 goals to reach the final and eliminate Brazil. It might have
been a gotup case, because Peru was a very good team with arguably the
best goalkeeper in the world on their side and it's hard to believe they
conceded 6 goals but as I said anything is possible with a bit of luck
and a few key players being/not being at their respective bests.

This match was the first EB-MB match that I followed live (radio
commentary that is), my vague memory from that and next day's
Anandabazar sports section tells me that it's actually MB who played
better, even though we all know Anadabazar was always so much more
critical to EB than any other team on earth.

Bhaskar, IMO, was one of those rare Indian footballers who had real
class, Bhaskar was the best goalkeeper in Asia atleast for a few years
in his prime, except for his slight weakness in the air he's superior to
any goalkeep in India that I have ever seen, he was also one of those
rare players who rarely choked in big matches, always aggessive and
played with his heart and pride and superb physical fitness and
athlectic ability.

Italy 3-2 te Brazil ke hariyecchilo, fantastic khela hoyecchilo.
Zico, Socretes, Junior, Falcao, Leandro, Serginho, Edder, Nelinho, it's a
truely great team, pity they lost. They say WC '82 team of Brazil can only
be compared with WC'54 Hungary, WC'70 Brazil and WC'74 Holland team.
Note however that apart from WC'70 Brazil the other teams mentioned here
actually failed to win the cup ;-)

Harjinder was also a real fine player. But it always appeared to me that
he played without using his brains (ektu goNyar). But as far as strength

That's not entirely true, his career in Calcutta was finished but
as a player he had some achievements after that, almost singlehandedly(footed-ly ;-))
he won the Santosh Trophy for Punjab(year??), also he was the primary reason why
Punjab Police actually managed to become a dominant football force
in Punjab in the early 80's. Manjit didn't have any fight(atleast not anything
significant) with Surojit Sengupta, I some how feel Surojit Sengupta
is too meek to be fighting with someone) Manjit had problems with Devraj,
East Bengal acquired Devraj in 1979 from SOuth India(Karnataka?), I don't
know the whole story but the Punjabi trios(Gurdev, Harjinder, Manjit) had
fights with Devraj which resulted in fights with officials and other players.
Manjit left East Bengal.

:-) ;-) Harjinder was not the typical Punjabi in that sense, he was really
fragile, extremely injury prone. I must say that his skills were great and very
subtle, his dribbling was really of the finest order, of all the Indian
footballers that I have seen only Surojit, Manjit Singh, Krishanu and
Xavier Pias compares with him in terms of dribbling skill.
Another Punjabi footballer that I admired was Parminder Singh.

Harjinder was amazing with his left foot, but very injury prone,
very good ball control, extremely good dribbler but always
lacked motivation. Infact "sukkho" is the very word you use
when you describe Harjinder. Probably coming from a rich family
didn't help either in terms of motivation to stick around,
work hard, make money and all that sort of things.
