Dharla Bridge opens today
UNB, Dhaka
The Dharla Bridge, country's first locally financed bridge, will open to
traffic today, fulfilling a century-old demand of the people of four upazilas
in Kurigram district. Prime Minister Khaleda Zia will formally inaugurate the
bridge, built at a cost of about Tk 100 crore. Official sources in Kurigram
said the inauguration of the bridge will bring some 700,000 people of Sadar,
Bhurungamari, Nageswari and Fulbari upazilas under direct road communication
network. The 648-metre-long bridge has two lanes with 1,25-metre wide footpaths
on both sides. It has 15 spans, 16 pillars and 6.4-metre approach road. The
initiative to construct the bridge over Dharla was taken by Prime Minister
Khaleda Zia in 1995-96. And the then prime minister Sheikh Hasina laid the
foundation stone of the bridge on February 24, 2000. The Al-Amin Construction
Company Limited constructed the bridge according to a design prepared by
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.
