If Bengali jokes mean jokes about Bengalis, here goes one. It, I believe,
was cited by Khushwant Singh in one of his columns and later quoted
in some Bangladeshi magazine.
A Punjabi was travelling by train when, at one station, he was joined
by a Bengali. The newcomer, like the average Bengali Babu, had a small,
almost frail, physique. His luggage, however, were huge and heavy. The
sardarji, who, like the average Punjabi, was big and strong, watched
his fellow traveller struggling in vain to lift his
luggage to the overhead rack. After a few minutes, he lost his patience,
got up, snatched the luggage and placed it on the rack without much
effort. "You Bengalis," he said as he went back to his seat, "eat too
much rice. That's why you are so damn weak."
The Bengali, was naturally offended, but did not dare a reply. He sat
silently plotting a revenge. After some time, the Babu suddenly rose
from his seat and tried to pull the emergency chain in the train.
You pull this chain if there is a fire, for example, or any other
emergency that the engineer might not notice, but requires the
train to be stopped. Pulling it without a reason is a punishable
offense. The Babu kept on pulling the chain, but, apparently, was
too weak for the task.
Sadarji, sure enough, was watching the spectacle with contempt
in his eyes, and finally decided to give the weakling a hand. He
shoved the Babu aside, and pulled off the chain effortlessly. When
the guard of the train came to enquire who had pulled the chain,
causing the train to stop unnecessarily in its tracks,
the Babu promptly pointed to the Punjabi. After the Punjabi payed
the hefty fine for his crime, his companion commented, "You
Punjabis consume too much wheat. That's why you are too damn
stupid."
The story ends there. I hope the Punjabi did not decide to
demonstrate his physical strength one last time to the Bengali.
If you don't find the joke funny, its because the way I've told
(written) it.

#1. (Eshob goppo ki ingriji-te hoy?) Shibram once borrowed 100 Rs from his
neighbour Rambabu promising to repay on the following sunday. When that
repayment day came he borrowed 100 Rs from another neighbour Shyambabu
to repay Rambabu's loan. Next sunday he again borrowed from Rambabu to
pay Shyambabu's loan. This thing went on for some weeks. Then one day
Shibram called both his neighbours and explained that, "look, for last
a few weeks I'm taking money from one of you and giving it to the
other alternately. Now, enough is enough. Let me get rid of this. Why
don't you guys do it yourselves?
#2. (My poor English cannot translate this).

|>Authentic bengali jokes can be found in collections of Molla Nasiruddin
|>and the `kutti' jokes compiled by Syed Mujtaba Ali.
Correction: Molla Nasiruddin jokes have a middle eastern origin (probably
Baghdad or Damascus, during the Ottoman Empire) and can't be called "authentic
Bengali jokes". They were, however, assimilated in almost every language in the
world and added to in course of time.

Being annoyed by the misdeeds of their cat Chini, the whole family
decides to get rid of the creature and over-enthusiastic Sibram
takes the responsibility of the deportation. According to the
advices received from his friends, Sibram ties the cat inside a sack
and takes it away from home to abandon it. But as one may expect,
he was much disappointed to discover that Chini had reached home
before he did with a joy of success. Repetition of the same procedure,
but with different locations, proved nothing more than the cat's
determination and the insistent pattern of its behavior.
Attempting it as a last resort, Sibram carries the sack-prisoned Chini
to Badobazar, a place known for its notorious congestion. After leaving
the cat there, to his dismay Sibram discovers that he himself has lost
his way home! Yes, then as you thought - he followed Chini obediently
to come back home.
