A few years ago I was dreaming that I am in China enjoying a fantastic trip.
In August 2004, just after my S.S.C. examination, my dream came true. My
parents were about to join the 28th International Conference of Psychology,
taking place in China, and my sister and I tagged along.
One of my favourite elements of the trip was dinner in Beijing's renowned
Hong Lian restaurant - Peking Duck.
The day of the dinner we were a bit exhausted because it was a relatively
hot day and we visited the famous tourist spots of Beijing, including The
Forbidden City and the Tiananmen Square.
To hear 'Peking duck restaurant', it seems like only the famous roasted
Peking duck is available there, but that's not right. I was really amazed to
see the various kinds of dishes served. Chinese cooking is justifiably
famous, a fine art perfected through the centuries. Quality, availability of
ingredients and cooking styles vary by region, but you'll almost always find
something to suit your taste. Your biggest problem may likely be figuring
out the menus. For cheap eats, the best places to look are around the train
stations and bus stops. Busy commercial districts will usually have some
small dumpling and noodle restaurants, and at night many cities have market
streets with good food available inexpensively. In the menus the contents
often include some very good deals. Out on the streets the problem is
language barrier. So it's really difficult to make them understand what you
want to eat.
Anyway when we reached the restaurant, we sat comfortably around a round
table which made it easy for us to chat and dine. The delegates sitting with
us were from The Netherlands, Norway and China. Dinner was served rather
quickly and we all had a great time chatting up new friends and tasting the
exquisite dishes. The tricky part was getting through the entire meal with
chopsticks which we weren't use to. The waiters were friendly and the
ambience was inviting. We rounded of the meal with green tea and treated
back to our hotels, feeling blissfully full.
