Miss Faria Lara's fate followed that of the first Bangladeshi woman pilot who
went down with a Biman's F-27 while trying to land in a Dhaka airprot in bad
weather as far as I remember in 1988. Miss. Faria Lara, about 25, a trained
pilot and a trainer with Air Parabat went down together with the trainee
pilot Mr.Rafiqul Islam, when the single engine plane she was flying
apparently went out of control and nose dived into a flour mill at Posta
Gola, near Dhaka. What remaind of the two were bits and pieces of flesh and
bones as the plane exploded upon impact. According to unconfirmed reports,
only two severed legs of her could be salvaged that were identifiede as being
of a woman. Nothing of the male trainee pilot could be identified.

Lara did a master's degree in English literature form DU and joined the Dhaka
flying club. She received her pilot's licence about two years ago. She was
rated for single engine aircraft. It's amazing how Air Parabat could engage
some one with so little experienece in flying , then again only licensed to
fly single engine aricrafts as a trainer.

She leaves behind her father Anwar Hossain a well renowned freedom fighter
and presently a Manager with Biman Bangladesh, her mother Selina Hossain a
noted novelist, a younger brother and her elder sister Mona who is currently
studying in UK under an ICDDRB scholarship.People who know Lara personally,
described her as a very bright and pretty woman, very smart and very
ambitious.

Not much could be gathered about Mr. Rafiqul Islam the trainee pilot as Air
Parabat refused to give any details. It may be mentioned here that Air Parabat
seems to be an ill fated airline which has at least one previous history of a
crash, when one of it's aircraft landed in a paddy field in Savar a few months
ago( fortunately there was no casualty).

I thank Bangladesh Online Ltd, Bangladesh's premier ISP for posting the news
with pictures at the URL http://www.bol-online.net. The web-site , seems to be
hastily created and uploaded was found on the web at 12 noon EST of Sept 27
1998.

There is also a feed back form where any one feeling like sending a condolence
message to the bereaved family can post their message which BOL promisese to
deliver to the family of the victims.

A great job indeed.
