What does the word malaun mean, anyway ? I know it is meant derogatorily toward
Hindus in Bangladesh (only; NOT in India). But I was trying to find the source
of this word -- in terms of etymology or corruption from another word, etc.
By the way, the word malaun does not affect Indian Bengalis like myself who
never got exposed to it. Howver, I sympathize with the agony you must have been
going through, much like I do with my Muslim brothers in India. Here is a story
for you:
My friend Apu lives in Park Circus, Calcutta.(For my Bangladeshi friends:
Park Circus, among a couple of other localities, has a high concentration of
Muslims, Bengali or non-Bengali. Still, they are a microscopic minority.)
Apu told me about this day when he was chatting with his friends on the side-
walk, near a paan-shop. They were talking about the then current political
humdrum that was going on. Suddenly, Apu's friend Partha said : "Shaala, shob
lerer dol deshtakey shesh korey phello". Immediately afterwards, they realized
that in their circle of chatting partners, there was Jamil, a childhood friend
of all of them. They grew up so closely that they almost forgot that Jamil was
a member of the religious group they were spitting on with hate.
Apu nudged Partha with his elbow. Partha realized and stopped in the middle of
his sentence. Everyone became embarrassed and quiet for a few seconds. Jamil
spoke first: " Tora eita korishna. Ei je kathar majhkhaney chup korey geli,
etar jonyo amar koshto holo aro beshi; karon, tora chokhey angul diye dekhiye
dili jey ami toder thekey alada, toder keu noi. Ja bolbi boley ja, etodin amar
shongey boro hoyechchish, amar kachchey kichchu gopon korbi keno ? Bol, aro
lere bol..."
This incident brought tears to my eyes.
What happened to you, Nripen-da, and what happened to Jamil-da, are both
WRONG , condemnbale, and needs to be stopped.
Regards,
Shoumyo.

I can't stop my temptation of telling exactly a similar story from my
account. ^^^^^^^
It was probably January of 1980. One of my closest friends, Mr. Nazrul Islam
(now PhD and a full Professor) and I used to live next to each other.
Every morning before breakfast we used to spend a while gossiping on
current university situation or the overall politics of the country.
That morning we were rejoicing our victory of teachers's council election
held on the previous day. One teacher Sunil Dutta voted to the other panel
which Nazrul did not like. He suddenly told, " Ei jonnaee ami malaunder
dekhte pari na". For a moment probably he forgot that I was a hindu too (so a
malaun) and slipped his tongue. In fact, we were so close that religions were
way below our friendship.
Nazrul recovered quickly and apologized for the whole day. This incident,
of course, did not damage our friendship. We are still friends.
Lately when I left the university in 1989 I let him stay in my University
apartment while he had been having hard time staying in a outside apartment
with his pregnant wife.

Hello? Did the police actually do this? Or are you just engaging in
conjecture?
If latter, please don't turn a political incident into a "communal"
one.

There is no way that I give the name and address of the police that
I mentioned. So
you have a better hand to prove me wrong which you might prefer.
Just a while before, in my post I mentioned another incident with
my friend Nazrul Islam. Here is the address. Please go check
and prove me a lier.
Professor M. Nazrul Islam
Dept. of Fisheries Technology

Thanks in advance.
