I do not know how authentic these informations are. I read them in a
Bengali newspaper published in NYC.

The wedding gifts Tarek(prime minister's eldest son) received during
his wedding are mind boggling.

Industrialist Murshed Khan presented the couple with a TK 92 lakh
worth diamond set. The Beximco group presented Tarek with a Tk 72 lakh
Toyota Deluxe Crown. Zahirul Islam presented a fully furnished
apartment in Eastern Towers. Aziz Mohammad Bhai took care of all the
expenses for the couple's honeymoon in Europe. Monno Ceramic group
presented a dinner set bought from a famous store in Paris. Maulana
Mannan presented the couple with a Tk 10 lakh cheque. Two ministers
presented Tarek with 17(yes seventeen) suits bought from Harrods. The
couple received a total of 96 t.v. sets. AND the list goes on and on.

Flowers were brought in from India for the wedding decorations and all
shopping for the bride was done in Dubai. Apparently, this information
was printed in a newspaper in Dhaka. Two students were arrested under
Special Powers Act when they were caught distributing the papers in DU
campus. These arrests further fueled suspicions that the printed
information was in fact true.

Personally, I am disgusted even if half the information is true. Will
Bangladeshinever learn from history? In 1974 while the country was
suffering from a famine Sheikh Mujib had a lavish weeding for his son
and this turned public opinion against him. Khaleda and BNP has done
the same thing twenty years later. When will our political leaders
realise that government is the servant of the people and not the
master of the people?

I read what I am about to print in a Bengali newspaper "PROBASHI."

Industrialist Murshed Khan presented the newly weds with a Tk 92 lakh
worth of diamond set. Beximco presented Tarek with a Toyota Crown
Deluxe worth Tk 72 lakh. Zahirul Islam presented a fully furnished
apartment in Eastern Towers. Aziz Mohammad Bhai is bearing all the
expenses for the couples honeymoon in Europe. Maulana Mannan presented
a Tk 10 lakh cheque to Tarek. Two ministers presented Tarek with 17
(yes, seventeen) suits from Harrods. A total of 96 T.V's were received
as gifts. The mind boggling list goes on and on.

The original article appeared in a newspaper in Dhaka. Two students
were arrested under Special Powers Act, when they were caught
distributing the papers in DU campus. This has fuelled suspicions that
the original article is valid.

Flowers were flown in from India for wedding decorations and all
shopping for the wedding was done in Dubai.

Personally, I am disgusted even if half the material printed in this
article is true. When will Bangladesh learn from history? In '74
Sheikh Mujib had a lavish wedding for his son when Bangladesh was
suffering from a famine. Sheikh Kamal's wedding was instrumental in
turning public opinion against his father. Even today people remember
Sheikh Kamal being crowned during his wedding with contempt. Twenty
years later Khaleda Zia has done the same thing. When so many things
in BD is in a disarray the idiot holds such a lavish wedding for her
son. Bangladesh cannot afford these kind of immature politicians to
run the country. When will the political parties in Bangladesh realise

that government is the servant of the people and not the master of the
people ?

I understand why you are disgusted regurding the information.
But we have to be practical is a sense that even in a "middle" class wedding the shopping is done from a contry than BD. As far as those gifts, I am sure that thos who gave them had selfish reason behind it. Aulthough we should keep an eye of the government, we should also bear in mind that our critisism have to be constructive and be rational. Along with the critisism we also have to give cradit for many things that was done right, like inviting the opposition leaders and the food arrengment etc.

best regards..

The original article was published in the form of a newsletter
published by a student run 'watchdog' group in DU. Naeem brought me a
copy of that newsletter. Apparently, the invitations that went out
asked people not to bring any gifts.

To answer your question: maybe never.

Currently people go into politics and the BCS because opportunities
for graft make them much more lucrative than the private sector.
Hopefully, as the private sector grows, it will pay much higher wages
than government service, and the really avaricious people will stay in
the business world. It seems to me that this is what happens in the
rich countries.

The question, of course, is whether our society will ever reach that
level of affluence...

The information I have from a weekly from Dhaka is as follows:

Tarek got married to late Admiral M.A. Khan's daughter. The celebration
was very pompous. There was a quote from the famous Fakhruddin baburchi in the
article in which he said he had an order of 10000 people and he charged Tk 150
per person.
But the article had no info on the gifts. So I have no idea about that.
Still it is quite hard to imagine that Khaleda would be so foolish to accept
those gifts when there is such a strong opposition and a free media
waiting on the wings to grab such news--specially when there has been a
news report charging 17 ministers of financial wrong-doing.

I love the way you don't mention another political party implying that
that is the most sacred and non-corrupt and most of all, a patriotic
political entity in Bangladesh. Well, I don't think we need to start up
another flame chain discussing why or why not we should vote Jamaat-e
Islami into power. But a good choice of words demonstrating the hint.

Well, it is kinda obvious what the "gunodhor" Tarek should
do--he should give it all back to where it came from!!

I think people are reacting a little too hastily to Tarek Zia's wedding ceremony.
I think before jumping into conclusions we should find out about the authenticity
of the news item. I would like to know Probashi's sources. As Saif pointed out
the original news item was published in a student run newsletter. I will definite-
ly question its validity and its purpose. Without proper reportings from a respectable newspaper in Dhaka, I will have to dismiss the newsitem as baseless
propaganda. I would however defintely welcome anyone on the net to post articles
from well known newspapers in Dhaka confirming the original posting.

Simple! If I was Tarek, I'd return the political and corporate "gifts".
