January 27, 1998: Mohammad Bari (this writer) posts in SCB a list of 'Bir
Protik' (B.P.) Bangladesh Armed Forces officers from Rafiqul Islam's book
'A Tale of Millions'.
February 2, 1998: Nazul Islam, B.P., e-mails Mohammad Bari with his
reaction.
"Mr Bari I did not understand what list you have written. I am not concerned
what Major(retd) Rafiqul Islam ( Bir Uttom ) writes in his book.
The list you have mentioned that is not the total list of Gallantary award
holders. It was published in the guezzete in 1972 and again in 1992 when
Begum Zia presented the medals and the total lists also kept in Dhaka
National Museam."
February 9. 1998: Mohammad Bari writes back to ANM N Islam, B.P.
"I am sorry for the confusion I have created by posting the B.P.
lists, which only contains officers of regular Bangladesh armed
forces.
If you want I can post your letter and my explanation to scb.
Let me know your decision. But I can tell you this, I do enjoy
your posts in scb. And I do salute and revere all our freedom
fighters for their sacrifices in the war of liberation, with
or without any gallantary awards."
February 11, 1998: ANM Islam, B.P. replies.
"Thank you for your writing. I am not a big man or important person. I
really write just which I cannot hide.I feel for my country and people
but I have nothing to do. Our people are handicaped( JIMMEE) in the hand
of our corrupt and selfish politician who ever he is what ever the party
he belongs. But Still there are some good people too. But the ego of
party made them cripled . Maj(rtd) Akhtaruzzaman is the best example. We
everybody know about Khaleda Zia's educational background/political
background, experience and the quality of leadership. But at the same time
I have to accept that she is a leader of opposition and party chief of
only opposition.
I pray to almighty Allah that let Bangladeshies be educated to choose a
leader has the quality of leadership, not the beauty or glammer like actress
of hindi film. Film and politics , society, social responsibility are
different.Without education and knowledge no leadership is a leadership
which can bring any change.
Khaleda Zia signed so many papers even she doesn't know what she is signing
where hasina is a bit different. She was broght up in an enviornment of
politics / revulation and has a potential educational background and her
husband also an educated , politically concious person.
Any way I am not an awamileagure but of course I am a blind supporter of
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman( BB) I am the witness how Bango Bandhu were made
unpopular. That was a total conspiourecy and that made beliveable to the
uneducated common mass. The situation and after effects of 1971. May I ask
you(?) if you own a house is burnt how you would take to repair and
overcome the loss. Where the country was totally without Bankreserve. Even
the seaports were made able to anchor ships by 1974. Plus there were some
corrupt and selfish( SHUBIDHABADI) even Fazlul Haque Moni's role were not
in favour of Bango Bandhu. And all the secretaries were true buroecrats.
They were not and even now are not thinking about peoples welfar. They only
think they should be in power and I mean power should remain in their
hand whichever party or who ever comes to power. But there were no single
face who could stand infront of Bango Bandhu. So, they in a planed way
made BB un popular. You might have seen in recent news that hindu girl who
worn net in liew of cloths in 1974 made an statement that she posed that
photograph only for thirty Taka. My question who paid that Thirty Taka and
got the photograph for what? And that was a big news. So, there were so many
propoganda where Razakars/Muslimleagures/Zamatees/and leftist group those
who claimed share of power after liberation but did not get they all
together joined hand and in a planned way they focusing all the weakside of
Bango Bandhu's administration and even after 1975 those weakthings are
existing in the administration but oppositway being focused. It is rather
praised. If not can you mention what golden spoon we got after sending
BangoBandhu in a dartiest way of history. And all the repatriated personnel
either in defence or in civil were against of BangoBandhu being jeolus to
those freedom fighters. I can mention one point only that the freedom
fighters were given two years of antidated seniority. However I strongly
denounce the activities of some awami leagures for whom this grass rooted
organisation remained out of power and unpopular in the hand of few
nonpolitical urdiowala and denounced rajakars/killers/looters,But general
mass could it realise?
Look at the statement of General(retd) Shafiullah BU and another Air Vice
Marshal (Retd) AK Khondoker.BU. what both of them said are totally
unacceptable. In one statement they say chain of command in defence were not
broken only few misleaded dismissed junior Officers did this. If it is so
that three chief of staffs were loyal to the Govt and the chain of command
also were not broken. So, why they failed to take any action? Replied, (both)
could be a civil war.How few junior dismissed officer whom none of the
country knows and why airforce could not even could fly one single aircraft
or Helicopter?Army/Airforce/Navy were not devided.Civilians werenot
devided. Then how civil war would take place. When 99% East pakistanies voted
and won even then it took nine months and help of India thus International
Community, Then Dalim and gong a total of twenty /thirty officer could lead
the civil war? Do you want me to belive that? when I was a freedom fighter
and I have seen them. In fact they are hiding their inefficiency and
cowardness + failure of making right decision promptly. And I belive Gen
Zia was involved indirectly. And his involvement gave double speed to those
defunct group and dismissed officers. Any way sorry to take your so long
valuable time. Please pardon me for that I personally know the role of Gen
Zia and it is true that he is a cold blooded killer. He not only killed Bango
Bandhu but thousands of others included the freedom fighters, but I should
not name col, Taher B.U. reason he got his dues from Gen Zia.Taher saved Zia
and Zia rewarded him with death penalty.
Finally I thank you that you read my poor and little incomplete postings.
Thank you once again that you cary in yourmind love for the freedom fighters
which is rare. Rather our young generations are fond of BNP(which is full of
Razakars). The young generations should be told the history of Bangladesh not
the story made by BNP.
Thank you."
In another e-mail he concludes:
"You may post my letter previous one and present one too.But ofcourse I
will solicit your positive attitude and action. I love my people what
ever party or Ideology they have as long as they don't support anti
liberation forces.Anti liberation forces should be treated anti Bangladeshi
and pro Pakistani. And Pakistani people were never ever our people and friend
or brother, But they sometime claims on the name of relegion that they are
our brother .But where were those religion and brother in 1971.Did any one
curse or denounce the army action in Bangladesh. Or Even after 25 years
look at their attitude I saw the writings of Jonab Abed Khan in this
regard."

Selling Bangladeshi Fuel: Cons
The history and the analysis of the similar situation in other
countries show that the selling natural resources brought
prospertity for certain group of people leaving the general
mass below poverty level. On the other hand, countries
utilizing their natural resources in their own countries
brought slow but strong development for the whole mass.
For example, I went to Venezuela in 1988 to 1989 for
seven different visits in every after approx. 2 months.
Venezuela was one of the largest oil producing countries
in the North America. It also has reserves of Iron ore and
gold mines. A visit to Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, will
surprise the tourists the richness of Venezuela. And the outside
of Caracas will depict the poverty and slums of Venezuela. I have
visited the small villages and town accross the Rio Orinico. People
has nothing to wear, naked children running around, slums, and
poverty. If someone needs to see some proof, I have taken many pictures
to show.
Today, Venezuela has little oil left. Exporting oil,
iron ore etc. brought richness for a certain class of people, built
a beautiful capital, however, could not reduce the poverty of the
mass. On the other hand, instead of exporting oil, it could have
utilizes
them to build industry in her own country employing the mass.
Venezuelan oil and iron ore were used in the Steel Mills in
Baltimore and Philadelphia employing Americans ( expensive labor);
on the other hand, the Venezuelan mass remained unemployed and
live below povery level accross the Rio Orinico through which
all Venezuelan Ore were shipped to the USA. Just 60 years ago,
American economy was in horrible shape. I hear stories from my
American host mother about the depression, about the life in
America when she was a kid. I find the similarities of what
is happening now in Bangladesh. But, the USA grew first
utilizing its own fuel, then buying fuel from other countries.
The Kansas wheat farmers who feed almost half of the world
population were the poor most people just 60 years ago. Western
Kansas having no river could not produce anything because of
the shortage of water. After the discovery of oil in Kansas,
farmer's started to run electric pumps to suck water from the
underground. Once deserted West Kansas turned green by using
Kansas resources oil to pump water from underground. Kansas
size greater than Bangladesh did not sell away its oil to
other countries not even to other states. It used it's raw
natural resouces (water and oil) to produce wheat.
Kansas sells it's product (i.e. wheat) not it's natural resources
(i.e. water and oil).
Bangladesh will take long time to grow slowly if it utilize
its own resources instead of selling it. If it is sold outside,
Dhaka will be a beautiful city, a group people will be very rich
as Nigeria, however, a oppressive government such as Shah, Arab Sheikh,
Nigerian Dictators, Saddam Hussain, Algerian Military will rule in
different name ( BAKSAL or BNP); and we will see brothers of
human right activities coming to the USA to tell the stories
of poor Bangladeshis as the brother of executed Nigerian poet came to
our university last year to make the following comments:
"... we cannot sleep at night because of
the noise of the huge pipe lines carrying fuel towards port; however,
we don't have fuel at our home to burn lamp. We try to cultivate
our land, the pipes blow and destroy our land... we were happy and
peaceful when we did not have anything, now we are sad after we have
oil..."

Please can you give your so called list of the BIRS of BANGLADESH ?
Mr. Khan:
Good article !!!
The article seems like a winner at a cursory glance. And this is exactly the
kind of impractical, unbusinesslike, rhetorical, opinionated, Mr. know-all
type attitude we all have got in the subcontenent. This article should have
included the following thoughts as an objective assessment of the situation
with respect to the natural gas policy of Bangladesh:
1) Which oil company is going to be interested to enter into a long term
marketing plan for natural gas when our domestic market is so small ( in
dollar terms)? May be one or two, and that will be enough to reach a
saturation point, I guess.
2) Why is it that so many countries in the Middle East are sitting with vast
reserves of natural gas, but are unable to earn sizable amount of foreign
exchange by exporting it? I hear that just one gas field in Qatar has a
quantity of gas equivalent to our total proven gas reserves. Why is it that
the Central Asian countries and Iran are trying to talk Pakistan into
allowing its territory to set up pipelines to export to India?
Answer: There is no sizable market nearby where they can export natural gas.
Commercially feasible quantities of this commodity can only be exported
through pipelines. India is the only country and perhaps Turkey which can be
good markets for them. Perhaps Europe to some extent!
3) Why aren't these countries setting up all kinds of petochemical complexes
to add value to their exports ( Saudi Arabia included)? Why aren't foreign
companies flocking to these cities to set up such plants?
Answer: These complexes need huge investments in capital and technology. The
expected rate of return must be there and competition is also very keen. The
cost of the raw material component is not of great importance to any industry
in the information age. That's why Japan which has not a single iron ore mine
has been a successful producer of steel. No one buys steel from India.
Suggestion: Bangladesh should exhaust all avenues to utilize this commodity
in the domestic economy, but should have an open mind to consider exporting
it to the vast market in India after meeting its requirements.
