He has no 'abodan' in BUET's excellence rather he introduced
factionalism among BUET teachers and led almost complete destruction
of BUET's reputation as an Institute of Excellence. We thank Allah
that Awami League came to power in 1996 and saved BUET from complete
annihillation.
During the last 5 years of Awami League rule, BUET was free from
politically motivated VCs. But we might again witness the viscious
Nazi 'thaba' on BUET's campus soon!

For the sake of setting the record straight, a few lines need to be
said here.
Dr. Shahjahan became the Vice Chancellor of BUET by dint of his
qualifications,
experience and demonstrated administrative ability. There is no rule
(or
tradition) that ‘the senior-most’ professor has to be the
Vice Chancellor.
(And there would not be any rational behind such a rule if it
existed). It is
not at all true that the senior-most teacher was always appointed as
BUET VC
before Dr. Shahjahan. Anybody who is familiar with BUET over the last
two decades will identify such cases. Dr. Shahjahan was academically
among the two
senior-most professors serving the university when he was appointed
BUET VC.
Dr. Shahjahan was not politically aligned or biased to any political
party when discharging his duties as Vice Chancellor. He may have his
own personal political opinion like everybody else, but that never
interfered in maintaining his neutrality as the VC. This can be easily
verified from the members of the teacher, student and employee
communities of BUET. He treated every teacher and
student fairly irrespective of their political ideologies.
When Dr. Shahjahan was not a part of BUET anymore, he was free to
pursue any
work he liked. He became the President of IEB, which was an honorary
position. He essentially infused new life to this organization with
his
usual style by initiating a number of new projects for the engineering
profession in Bangladesh. He energized IEB and freed it from the
mundane
cycle of some routine activities.
One does not have to go too far to find out about Dr.
Shahjahan’s sincerity,
integrity, dedication to duties, and capacity. General population of
BUET
will testify to the success of his administration when it enjoyed the
best
academic atmosphere and development in recent time. He was a person
who
always refused to yield to adversities and went beyond his routine
duties to
break the status quo. His dynamism, indomitable enthusiasm, courage
and work
for aggressive targets are hard to be matched by anybody in
contemporary
Bangladesh. It would only expose the extreme level of our intellectual
bankruptcy if we fail to take benefit of the vision of Dr. Shahjahan
for the
good of our country due to narrow partisan attitude.
Sincerely,
M. T. Rahman
