About 55 armed gangs, some having links with international mafia and terrorist
outfits, rule the underworld of the capital city of nearly 10 million people.
These gangs believed to be responsible for a high percentage of the five lakh
crimes including murders of police and also army personnel in Dhaka since the
liberation of the country, have tightened their grip in the city.
A source in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Police told The New
Nation that members of these gangs are wanted in connection with several
heinous crimes committed in different parts of the city. Although the
law-enforcing agencies have detailed information such as names of the kingpins
and their usual area of activity the offenders from these gangs are seldom
arrested and much less prosecuted because of the shelther and patronage they
receive from godfathers hobnobbing with lawmakers, ministers, political
leaders, owners of industry, smugglers and other influential persons in
society.
Based on the crimes dossier, the police have prepared a list of top of these
crime syndicates-notorious for the ruthlessness and ferocity of their past
'operation'.
A 'who-is who' of the city's crime world obtained from the CID shows that the
criminals have spread their tentacles to most parts of the city including the
commercial districts and the terminals of city and suburban transport.
It is no secret that in addition to the strength they draw from political
patronage and proximity to money bags, the crime gangs also lean heavily on the
cover support they receive from black sheep within the law enforcing agencies.
The thirty of the fifty crime gangs identified by a senior official of the CID
with their areas of activity in brackets are: Nazim-Munna (group Jatrabari and
Sayeedabad), Titu-Munna group (Laximpur), Kazal group (Johnson Road, Kala
Liaquat group (Sutrapur), Sagir-Kazal group (Kalta Bazar), Nasir-Khokhan group
(Gopibagh), Three brothers and Liton group (Maniknagar), Alam group (Jurain),
Emran group (Motijheel), Shaheen-Lyton group (AGB Colony), Manik-Murad group
(Shahjahanpur), Badrul-Rashed group (Khilgaon), Rasu group (Siddeswari),
Shubra-Pappu group (Moghbazar) Kala Khokan and Anu group (Lalbagh), Sultan
group (Fulbaria), Rafiq-Pintu group (Hazaribagh), Al Ameen group (Rupnagar),
Liton group (Mirpur section 10), Karamat group (Tolarbagh),
Bikash-Prakash-Kaiyum group (Paikpara) Jhunnu-Pichchi Mamun group (Agargaon),
Shameem group (Shewrapara), Ashru group (Rayerbazar), Sabu-Aslam group
(Razabazar), Chakma-Khokan group (Monipuripara), Imon-Haris group
(Mohammedpur), Tempu Salim group (Kafrul) and Alexander group (Kathalbagan).
The ten of the crime syndicates, according to police Headquarters are:
Imon-Haris group, Nazim-Munna group, Sagir-Kazal group, Titu-Munna group, Aslam
group, Shubra group, Bikash group Karamat group, and three brother group. These
groups are wanted for years and established their reign of terror at
Mohammadpur, Sayeedabad, Jatrabari, Kaltabazar, Gopibagh, Mirpur and Ramna,
police said, adding that over last decade, these groups killed 188 persons
including police officer Farhad, Ahad, film star Sohel Chowdhury, businessman
Shipu.
These groups run by private god-fathers have been alarmingly spreading its
networks in different fields of criminal activities showing their
specialisation as well as supremacy over the personnel engaged for maintaining
law and order by the state.
Political rivalry and patronisation helps these groups move elsewhere in the
city as well remote areas in their need and crisis. They have sophisticated and
latest arms and international links with Mafia gangs and other bodies involved
in terrorism, a senior police officer said.
Smuggling of any kind of drugs, realisation of extortion, killing for political
and personal gains are their main functions throughout the country.
These groups have been in the wanting list of different law enforcing agencies
as a good number of cases including murder, bank dacoity, smuggling,
kidnapping, extortion and black-mailing were filed against them over years.
Ten of these arms groups are listed by the law enforcing agencies for their
'ferocious' and dangerous' 'Operation' they conducted in the past.
Some of the members of these groups, according to police, who rule over the
areas even in presence of the law enforcing personnel are: Kazal, Swapan,
Masud, Obead, Nakkata Masud, Sandle Mintu, Punam, Jumman, Munna, Tapan, Paris,
Sayeed, Badal, British, Sweden Aslam, Ayub, Shubra, Bikash, Prakash, Nazim,
Sagir, Titu, Kala Liaquat, Hatkata Bakar, Bastard Salim, Tiger Babul, Daring
Jonnie, Palestine Babu, Pichchi Shameem, Pagla Shaheed, Murgi Rahim, Bota
Liton, Pichchi Mamun, and Tempu Salim.
Most of the members of these arms gangs have stay at MP Hostals, five star
hotels, residence of the council of ministers, student halls on the campus,
houses of influential businessmen and industrialist, and above all central jail
at Nazimuddin road in the city they wear jeans, shirts, kades and in some cases
the bullet proof jackets while motor bikes, specially the XL type is their
favourite means of transportation. They use jeeps, microbus, Nissan petrol jeep
and auto-rickshaw for their movement.
Mobile telephone, pager, message paper and radio telephones are their means of
communications.
All kind of arms and ammunition are used by them. They use Sub Machine Gun, AK
47 Rifle, Chinese Rifle,.22 Bore Pistol, pump action short gun, country and
foreign-made gun, pistol and revolver.
These people spread their networks in the field of realising extortion,
snatching, dacoity, murder, rape, kidnapping, black-mailing, keeping hostage
for ransom, taking possession of terminals, students halls, land property, bank
dacoity, smuggling of drugs and even trafficking of human flesh.
They have political liaison and shelters over the years and acted as musclemen
for political parties and specially for party in power. Some of the god-fathers
were arrested recently, some others left for foreign countries. Some of them
were killed on the spot at different places and times even on the Dhaka
University campus. Some of the god-fathers became members of the parliament.
