Bangladesh-Ershad-people : Former Bangladeshi president Ershad
admits adultery with MP
DHAKA, April 8 (AFP) - Deposed Bangladeshi president Hussain Muhammad
Ershad finally owned up to a much rumoured affair with an MP from his
Jatiya Party in a newspaper interview published here Tuesday.
Ershad admitted he was romantically linked to Zeenat Hossain, the wife
of opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party MP Mosharraf Hossain.
His confession came two weeks after he denied rumours that he had
strayed
from his wife of 14 years.
"The problem is complex (and) embarassing, but I have made my stand
known to Zeenat and now it is her turn to decide," he told the
Bengali-language Sangbad newspaper.
He said he was "very weak' where this issue was concerned, adding
"I am somehow stuck with this problem ... This problem has to be
solved."
The affair came to a head some two weeks agao when at his 68th birthday
party he handed the first slice of cake not to his wife of 14-years,
Raushan, but to his lover, he said.
His wife walked out but eventually agreed to return to their home in
the wealthy Gulshan district after Ershad spoke to her, although he
added he had not gone to see here right away.
"The first few days I did not go to bring her (back). Then when I went
she placed some conditions, to which I said 'look, you know our 14-year
history ... then why such conditions,'" he was quoted as saying.
"At one stage, I told her, 'remember I am a man, if you exceed your
limits
you will lose your husband,'"
Ershad said he understood that no relationship could continue in such a
manner especially as Bangladesh's "morality factor" would not permit it.
Under Islamic law a man can have up to four wives, provide that the
first
wife agrees.
Ershad and Raushan have a son, Saad, and an adopted daughter, Jabeen.
Ershad, a former army general, seized power in a bloodless coup in 1982.
He was deposed in a massive pro-democracy campaign eight years later and
served a six-year sentence for corruption before his release on bail
in January.

Comments: its not the admission of adultary which depresses me, but his
attitude and arrogance. To paraphase "I am a SOB, but rock the boat and
I will divorce you". It is also a sad indictment on our society that a
wife is left in such a precarious position. While what really should
have
happened is that this jackass should have been left with only a pair of
shirt on his back.

Zahid

Did I say or imply this? Care to read what i actually wrote again.
Just to clarify for you, saying "left with a pair of shirt on his
back" means "taken to the cleaners" as in a divorce settlement. Hope
this has clarified any misunderstanding you have perceived.
Honestly, I find it depressing that we are so quick to nit pick and
interpret what is not there rather than discuss matters of substance.
Ershad highlights one of the more unacceptable aspect of our society;
the treatment of women. A woman is not a vassal of her father or her
husband. A failed marriage is regarded as a failure of the wife, and
hence pressure on the woman to put up with an unreasonable man.
In a divorce, the woman is almost always disadvanted financially.
The man almost always gets custody of children.
Now these are more important issues to discuss.

Ever heard of a man getting stoned for adultery in Bangladesh?

Never claimed you said it. It was a question to SCB people.
Boy you take things personally :).
I think it is a matter of importance when people who would
condemn un-islamic behaviour at the drop of a hat are silent when a
powerful man commits a crime under Islamic law.
Have no disagreement with you about status of women. However, I
think the class system and the remenants of the caste system.
If you are from the right class you can get away with anything as
does Ershad.
In Paksitan specially, the caste system is alive and well among the Muslims.
