Bid to enhance trade relationship
Bangladesh trade fair in London from May 15
Staff Correspondent
Single country trade fair of Bangladeshi goods in London can be a better
option for enhancing the existing trade ties and socio-economic relationship
between Britain and Bangladesh, a press conference on Expo Bangladesh 2005
to be staged in London was told on Thursday.
Bangladesh-British Chamber of Commerce (BBCC) organised the press conference
at the National Press Club in collaboration with Export Promotion Bureau
(EPB).
Expo Bangladesh 2005 will take place at Barbican city in London on 15 May
with the commitment of non-resident Bangladeshi businessmen to bridge the
gap of socio-economic and cultural fronts between Britain and Bangladesh.
The fair will continue till September 17.
"A Partnership for Progress" will be the slogan for the exposition.
A total of 100 companies are expected to participate in the fair. This is
the first ever such single country fair in London.
Dr Wali Tasar Uddin, Director General of BBCC, UK and the Coordinator of the
fair said, "we are staging this event to familarise British businesses and
consumers with Bangladesh products both in existing and emerging markets, to
encourage greater trade between Britain and Bangladesh companies and to
show that Bangladesh is able to offer quality products at affordable
prices."
The press conference was addressed among others by Alan Tweedie of Melange
Network Limited , Scotland, Abdur Rouf JP, Scottish Regional President of
BBCC and Chairman of a group of Bangladeshi concerns in UK, Engineer S.M
Anwar Hossain, Regional President of BBCC and Dr Fazal Mahmood, member of UK
EXPO committee and Chairman of First Solution UK Ltd. and Syeed Chowdhury,
Editor of UK-Bangla Directory.
They all are the representatives of a business visiting delegate of
non-resident Bangladeshi businessmen led by Dr Wali Tasar. The delegation
came on May 1.
They are working with the exhibitors and supporting organisations, including
EPB.
Alan Tweedie said such fair would help the expansion of export market in the
UK and EU countries. "This single country fair can be a good exercise for
Bangladeshi businessmen to enhance their trade relationship with the British
businessmen."
BBCC Regional President-Bangladesh Engineer S.M Anwar Hossain said this is a
good opportunity for Bangladesh to enhance the relationship through such
exposition with Britain.
"To avail of such opportunities, we need media help for publicity," he said.
"We sincerely believe that the media plays a pivotal role in playing the
bridge between the peoples and other agencies, hence we would like to
solicit your cooperation to promote this cause without which our venture
would not bring the desired results," he added.
Abdur Rouf said UK is the third largest market for Bangladeshi goods.
"Bangladeshi goods, especially food items are very much in demand in UK and
the European union countries."
According to him, Bangladesh food items are better than those of China,
Thailand and Malaysia.
Dr Fazal Kamal, also a media personnel and businessman in UK called upon the
country media men to help promote Bangladesh's image in UK.
"Such single country fair will not only enhance the trade relationship
between Bangladesh and Britain, but also help in upholding the country's
image abroad," he maintained.
Goods like readymade garments (RMG), textiles, leather items, agro-foods,
ICT, sea foods, tea and drugs will be displayed at the fair.
