Schoolgirl murder in city

A teenaged schoolgirl and youngest daughter of an industrialist was stabbed to
death, allegedly by the cook of the house, in the city's Gulshan area in Dhaka
Thursday night.

Police picked up 18 persons, including two brothers of the suspected killer,
for questioning.

According to family and police sources, the cook Shahidul alias Shahid (22),
son of Siddik Mollah of village Danga Durgapur under Muksudpur thana in
Gopalganj district, has been absconding since the incident on Thursday night.
The incident was believed to have happened between 10:15 and 10:30 Thursday
night.

Receiving information, police rushed to the spot and found the body lying
inside a bedroom of the house. They identified the victim as Shazneen Tasnim
Rahman (15) -- daughter of Latifur Rahman, Chairman and Managing Director of
Transcom Limited. The body was found in the ground floor of the two-storey
building at Gulshan. There were several marks of injuries in different parts of
the victim's body. A knife was found pierced through her throat.

Police told this correspondent that they suspected that the victim had been
violated before being murdered.

Police picked up 16 persons from the spot for questioning. Police also brought
Shahid's two brothers, who were working in the Baridhara area, to know the
whereabouts of Shahid.

All the family members were busy at a family gathering on the first floor of
the house while the victim was alone inside her bedroom in the ground floor.
About 20 to 22 guests were at the function that started from 8 pm, sources
said.

A house-maid, who brought Shazneen's dinner at around 10 pm, informed the
victim's elder sister of the incident. The sister then phoned the police.

Some 12 persons, including two maids, are working at the residence of Latifur
Rahman. All the three cooks of the house are male.

The victim was the youngest of the three daughters and one son of Latifur
Rahman and a class IX student of Scholastica School.

The body was sent at about 11:30 am yesterday to the Dhaka Medical College
Hospital (DMCH) morgue for autopsy.

The body was handed over to the relatives after the autopsy, conducted by Dr
Mizan and Dr Belayet.

She was laid to rest at the Banani graveyard after namaj-e-janaza at the Banani
mosque.

A case was filed with Gulshan thana in connection with the incident.

As news of Shazneen's tragic death spread, a large number of political leaders,
diplomats, business leaders, journalists and intellectuals visited the
residence of Latifur Rahman to express sympathy with the members of the
bereaved family.

Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Begum Khaleda Zia, ministers, and MPs
also went to express their condolences over the premature death of Shazneen.

Meanwhile, the qulkhwani of Shazneen Tasnim Rahman will be held on Sunday after
Asr prayers at House No, Ne(j) 4, Road No 83, Gulshan-2, family sources said
last night.

2 maids accuse Shahid of murdering Shazneen

By Staff Correspondent

Police were yet to arrest the servant accused of killing the school girl,
Shazneen Tasnim Rahman, at their Gulshan residence in the city on Thursday
night.

Meanwhile, two maids of the house, in separate confessional statements before
the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's court yesterday, accused the servant,
Shahidul, for the murder, police said.

Youngest daughter of Transcom Ltd's Chairman Latifur Rahman, Shazneen, 15, was
brutally stabbed to death allegedly after being sexually abused in her bedroom
at about 10:15 pm.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police yesterday released a photograph of the wanted
man, Shahidul Islam alias Shahid, 22.

Police also recovered a blood stained knife from near the boundary wall of the
residence of Latifur Rahman yesterday. Earlier, police recovered some tissue
papers from Shazneen's toilet. Police said they suspected that the tissue
papers were used for cleaning the sharp weapon after the killing.

Shazneen was a student of class nine at Scholastica School.

A police officer of Gulshan thana yesterday said that they were waiting for the
autopsy report of the victim from the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Gulshan police produced the maids - Parvin and Minu, aged between 22 and 25 -
before the CMM's court yesterday afternoon. Later, they recorded their
confessional statements under Section 164 of the CrPC, police said.

Parvin in her statement said that she saw Shahidul sitting on the body of
Shazneen at about 10:00 on the night of the incident.

DMP's Detective Branch and the CID were also separately investigating the
brutal killing. Senior police officials were interrogating 16 people who were
picked up from Rahman's residence and some parts of the city following the
murder.

A police team which raided Shahidul's house at village Bhangadurgapur under
Moksedpur thana in Gopalganj district and some other areas in the village
returned to Dhaka yesterday morning.

Police said some other teams of plainclothes police kept vigilance on different
roads and waterways connecting the city.

A DMP press release last night urged the people to help the law enforcing
agencies arrest the alleged murderer.

The press release said anybody having any information about the whereabouts of
Shahid, son of Siddiq Mollah, can contact the Detective Branch Office, 36,
Minto Road, Ramna, Dhaka or phone at 9337362, 9337379, 413317, 413826, 419262,

Other telephone numbers for contact are: Deputy-Police Commissioner (North) at
9880072, Assistant Police Commissioner (Uttara Zone) at 894160 and
Officer-in-Charge, Gulshan thana, at 600486, 610234.
