Rubel murder case
Mukuli arrested as an accused

By Staff Correspondent>>>>>>>>>>Daily Star 9/10/98>>>>>>>>>>>>
Mukuli Begum, a local Awami League leader and neighbour of Shamim Reza Rubel,
was arrested by CID police yesterday as an accused in the Rubel murder case,
official sources said.

Mukuli Begum, 36, was arrested from her Siddeshwari residence at about 1:30 pm
yesterday. The arrest was made after the CID confirmed that the 'chit'
recovered earlier also contained her handwriting.
When contacted, Eliza, daughter of Mukuli Begum, said six policemen arrested
her mother on grounds that her handwriting was found in a 'chit' recovered by
the police earlier.
The principal accused, AC Akram, also had his handwriting in the same 'chit'
recovered from the possession of Hayatul Islam Thakur, one of the accused in
custody.
The 'chit' described the location of Rubel's residence on one side and the
address of a nearby coaching centre on its other side. Rubel was arrested by DB
police from in front of his house on July 23 and was tortured to death in their
custody the same day.
Earlier, Ivy Rahman, Chairperson of the Jatiya Mahila Sangstha affiliated with
the ruling party, in a statement said, "The mystery behind Rubel's murder may
be unveiled if Mukuli Begum, a local Awami League leader and a neighbour of
Rubel's family, is interrogated properly."

CID will now interrogate Mukuli to find out the motive behind the arrest of
Rubel. She is likely to be produced in the court of Chief Metropolitan
Magistrate today, sources said.
Mukuli was arrested following a tip off from the plainclothes policemen around
her residence that she was about to leave the house. When CID police rushed to
the spot, she told them that she was going to the hospital, sources said.
Police offered to take her to the hospital but she refused. Her husband, Dulal
Miah, wanted to know whether she was already under arrest and police confirmed
the arrest, the sources added.
Mukuli was then taken to the Rajarbagh Police Hospital for medical check up and
following clearance from doctors, she was taken to CID custody, police said.
Iftikhar, brother of Rubel, told The Daily Star last night that the arrest of
Mukuli was a positive sign in the investigation.
"It will now help find out the others who were involved in the arrest of Rubel
and his subsequent killing in DB custody," he said.
Iftikhar, however, wondered why principal accused AC Akram was still being kept
in the Prison Cell of the PG Hospital and why CID was reluctant to interrogate
him.
