W.Zaman Manik
Dr. Mazaharul Islam, an outstanding Bangladeshi scholar and an
intellectual of extraordinary merit and accomplishments, has breathed
his last on Friday (Nov. 14, 2003)at Bumrungrad Hospital, Bangkok
(Thailand) on Friday, November 14. He succumbed to Pulmonary Fibrosis.
He was 76. He left behind his wife, two daughters (Kabita Islam and
Dr. Chhanda Islam), two sons (Chayon Islam and Shuvan Islam), several
grandchildren, a host of relatives, former students, and numerous
admirers. After receiving M.A. degree in Bengali literature (he stood
First in First Class) from Dhaka University, he taught at Dhaka
College for a brief period. He then joined the Department of Bengali
in Dhaka University. He had moved to Rajshahi University where he was
Professor and Chairman of the Department of Bengali Literature and
Dean of Arts for a long period of time. He was also the Vice
Chancellor of Rajshahi University. After the emergence of Bangladesh
as a nation-state, Dr. Mazaharul Islam became the first Director
General of Bangla Academy. He received two Ph.D. degrees---- one from
Rajshahi University in Bengali literature and the other one was in
folklore from Indiana University, Bloomington.
Dr.Islam had published numerous books, articles, and monographs (both
in English and Bengali) from Bangladesh and India. He authored the
most comprehensive book (a voluminous book indeed --- almost 1000
pages) on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He has attended numerous
international seminars and conferences. He was visiting professor and
scholar in several Universities in the USA and India. He was one of
the pioneers in folklore research in Bangladesh. He had received
Bangla Academy Award for research and Dawood Prize for literature.
Dr. Mazaharul Islam took active part in the Mujibnagar Government
during the Bangladesh’s liberation war. He had toured several
countries during the liberation war as a representative of Bangladesh
Government in-exile. He was very close both to Bangabandhu SMR and
Tajuddin Ahmed. After the brutal murder of Bangabandhu SMR, he was put
under serious duress to issue statements in favor of the succeeding
regimes. He had refused to succumb to such black mailing or
intimidation. In retaliation, the then regime leaders had put him
behind bar on concocted and flimsy charges for almost three years.
After he got out jail, he taught as a visiting faculty in Delhi and
Calcutta. As a retired individual, Dr. Mazaharul Islam had emerged as
one of the most successful corporate entrepreneurs in Bangladesh. As
an enterprising industrialist, he became the employer of numerous
employees and workers.
Sincerely,
W.Zaman Manik
What a trashful and untrue posting. Can a Bangladeshi ever be
considered a scholar and intelligent? The word Bangladeshi is the
antonym of the word Intellect. Hahaha

"All's well that ends well" can also be rephrased as "All's bad that
ends bad." Such is the case with this awami pighead. Who gives a f*ck
to a 1,000-page book when it is replete with lies, innuendoes,
exaggerations and cover-ups? We all know the true colour of mujib who
was the result of illicit sexual union.
