This is really strange. I tried, too, and found everything from
"frontal lobe epilepsy" to "four letter expletive." And what's the
difference between EET (Eastern European Time) and this FLE?

I don't know. Probably the 'L' covers Lithuania as well. I guess the
abbreviation cannot include more than 3 letters. Up here we've never liked
the expression Eastern European Time (EET or OEZ). I mean, who wants to be
grouped with Romania, Bulgaria or even Greece.
As you know, in Finland we've even considered changing time zone -- not only
because it would be practical to have the same time and office hours as the
rest of the West in Europe, but partly also for psychological or political
reasons. I'm glad the Baltic countries moved back to our time zone after
experimenting with UTC +1/UTC +2 a few years ago.
'FLT' is quite all right, but of course an explanation should be available
on the internet.

Just call it BLT (Baltics/Lithuania/Turkey) and serve it at
McDonald's, since the latter owns you anyway.

Well, that has nothing to do with Italy. Almost all of Spain is *west* of 0°
longitude, so naturally Spain should have the same time as Britain. Daylight
saving time makes things even worse: they now have *our* winter time!

Note that whilst Latvia and Estonia are commonly known as Eastern
European, Finland is not. In other words: if you've been part of
Sovok or its satellites you are Eastern European.
Passed Kaltene few times recently (remembered of your adventure of
course)...and hello from people you've met in Melnsils. I did noticed
quite a few motorcaravans with German and Swiss number plates. Good
to see that some foreign tourism is taking place there (may be they
read your book???). Apparently the road from Kolka to Ventspils is
now started being prepared for refurbishment; nobody there knows when
they will start covering it though. Nothing else has changed there
except for "Lielveikals" in Melnsils - it became "mini Top".

My belated thanks for Melnsils greetings; hope everything is OK in good old
Blackheath. I've been vacationing along the southern shores of the Baltic
Sea -- only got back today.
Looking forward to an improved Kolka-Ventspils road (even if Maris isn't so
happy about the idea).

tourists, meaning some income to the region. -)) and I'm sure the
"stag" type won't ever go there. The locals would benefit from the

Well, to tell the truth, Peeteri, I'm so disgusted by this Russian move that
I don't think I want to communicate with people who *still* haven't
understood what the Kremlin (again!) is up to. They are truly not worth
bothering about.
But I had a very nice vacation, visiting Hanseatic gems like Lübeck, Wismar,
and Stralsund. We also went to Greifswald, where the local university has a
special department for 'Baltistik'. As you know, Greifswald is the planned
entering point for Gazprom's gas pipeline, which, under the new
circumstances, I definitely hope we will be able to stop. On Germany's
biggest island, Rügen, we saw Hitler's enormous holiday project Prora
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prora), and, speaking of the Nazis, we also
went to Peenemünde (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peenem%C3%BCnde), where
Wernher von Braun & co. "took the first steps on man's path into space",
like it says on one of the info boards (of course they knew nothing about
taking any steps into space, they were preoccupied with taking steps in
order to have London oblitterated.) We then drove into Poland still on the
island of Usedom and continued down to Szczecin (formerly Stettin) on
excellent roads that the EU has financed (meanwhile Latvia has to get along
with the Kolka-Ventspils type of dusty wash-boards). Stettin used to be the
southern end of Finland's steamship link with the continent. From there we
went to Berlin. Later I'll upload pictures both from this trip and from the
one in June to Baku.

Sounds like a great trip -- looking forward to the photos! I was able
to make it to Ventspils, but only for a few days -- it was great,
though (I flew from Rīga... I can't wait for the opening of Lociki
International Airport so that I can fly from here!). I'll be at the
Gothenburg Book Fair, by the way, on a panel about "the centre and the
periphery," i.e., where is Latvia's centre, other than Rīga, now that
it is not Moscow (not my idea...) and another on the soul and identity
of Latgallia. Any chance you will be in Göteborg? Latvia is the
featured country this year, and there will be many events that sound
cool -- the largest number of Latvian poets in one place outside
Latvia ever, for example.

Yes, and even Odaatje from Canada. It sounds tempting, and since I have one
sister and two brothers living in the Gothenburg area, accommodation would
not be a problem. But, alas, other plans are developing for the end of
September.
