Thanks for your comments on the Helsinki-Klaipeda set. I have now uploaded a
set with my pics from the Estonian islands of Vormsi, Hiiumaa, Saaremaa and
Muhu. Hope you like them.

This is the location: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ostsee/

John

Excellent photos, John. I liked the one with the beer 'comercial' ;-)

In your experience - do the islands (e.g. Saaremaa) become crowded in
summer?

Thanks,
EZ

These are truly marvelous, John! I especially like
http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=388075999&size=o -- I'll have
to let Black Monk know that the abominable middle class has produced a
new Caspar David Friedrich...

I've only been to Hiiumaa and only long ago (1992), but I still recall
it fondly... we dreank beer with a secret policeman (a not very secret
secret policeman) and a literary type from Tallinn who'd been born on
the island and remembered the last wolf and the first bicycle theft
(not being a Russophobe, I won't say...). One of the most amusing
things was a Soviet border station, still staffed back then. All
around it, Estonians were fixing up their houses. In the middle, this
total _bardak_, the fence around it full of holes. Rather than go
through a nearby hole, a gloomy soldier stood there endlessly ringing
the bell at the gate.

Regards,
/P

Glad you liked the pics, Evaldai. One of these days I'll get to the ones I
took in Lithuania...

No, I haven't experienced any crowds on the islands. But bear in mind that
the ferry capacity is not unlimited. Especially for the weekends you should
book a passage for your car, if you don't want to wait in the harbour for
the next free space.

Regards,
John

Liels paldies, Peeteri. That picture is nothing compared to the landscape
(or rather seascape) itself. It was a scenery that moistened your eyes and
put a lump in your throat.

Nice photos John, you have a good eye. I never realised there were so
many interesting sights on these islands.

Thanks!
Martin

I'm looking at the picture entitled "Hari kurk" - what sort of a
northern tree has such vivid red flowers?! It looks nearly tropical!

Thanks, Henry. Wait till I get to Lithuania... In general it's the comments
that take time, not the uploading.

John

If the resolution would be higher, I'm sure you would recognize this tree,
Anita. It's our dear old piilaadzis (LV) / pihlakas (EE) / pihlaja (FI) /
sermuksnis (LT). In other words, the rowan. So the 'flowers' are actually
rowan-berries. There were lots of them in August 2004, and they were big,
which, according to our folklore, is supposed to predict a snowy winter. But
that folklore was born before the age of global warming...

John

Nice pics, John! You remember me that I have never been on Vormsö/
Vormsi/Vorms. Must go this summer...

Look out for the snakes! Ormsö = snake island. Swedish 'orm' is obviously
related to English 'worm'. In Sweden probably even worms can bite.

My own ambition is to go to Ruhnu / Runö / Ronu sala...

I've seen it through binoculars from the coast (few kms south from
Kolka). I'd love to visit this island one day. Apparently there is a
ferry from Ventspils.

Your pics are really good. Accomodation for 2000 Soviet soldiers and
officers was particularly ammusing -))
