"Economy beats the odds"
- Peter Martin, The Age July 4, 2009
"AUSTRALIA is on track to defy the world and avoid
a recession in 2009, beginning a recovery early next
year, in the assessment of more than 20 leading economists.
The Age's half-yearly economic survey predicts an
economic contraction of a mere 0.1 per cent this
year followed by a rebound of 0.6 per cent in the
year to June 2010.
The forecast allows Australia to avoid the two
consecutive quarters of negative growth commonly
taken to define a recession, although it allows
for that possibility if the recession is mild.
It coincides with news that tax breaks and the end
of the financial year pushed sales of cars, buses,
trucks and utes towards an all-time high in June,
with sales exceeding 100,000 in June for only the fourth time.
"The surge is directly attributable to the budget
tax break," said Federal Chamber of Automotive
Industries chief Andrew McKellar. The budget
measure allows small businesses to write off 50 per
cent of the cost of vehicles bought by December.
"Business purchases are up 12 per cent on a year ago,
and business purchases of utes, vans and light trucks
are up 27 per cent," he said. "As a result of the budget
we've probably sold an extra 10,000 over three months."
The figures follow news this week of record retail
sales and a recovery in property prices.
Macquarie Group economist Richard Gibbs said there
was now little doubt the combined effect of the stimulus
measures and lower interest rates had "been more effective
in boosting spending and confidence than even optimists
had hoped".
Even the Macquarie Group enthusiastically endorses
the leadership in economic management by Kevin Rudd,
Wayne Swan and the ALP. And implicitly abandons the
anti-stimulus political slagging of Malcolm Merchantbanker
the failed Lieberal Party Leader.
Many people doubted the 'economic Manager' title the
tories awarded themselves simply because they inherited
Whitlam's visionary recognition China, Hawke's creation of
APEC and Keating's reform of the financial system, and
Costello and Howard did nothing but ride the wave of
the Asian economic boom, gave us a new tax, on everything,
which goes up automatically with prices, even if your
income doesn't, and left us with 12 interest rate rises
in a row and an attack on workers rights and entitlements.
Now the real economic managers, the ALP, are back, and
results are WORLD BEATING!! We are not just living off
China's prosperity, as under the tories, we are providing
leadership, and the world notices.
"the point of the stimulus was to support
spending so firms didn't have to slash payrolls."
And that means it saved JOBS, which would have been
lost if Malcolm Merchantbanker and the economic
spoilers had been at the wheel! 8^p
That's not me making the claim that the STUMULUS
PACKAGE SAVED JOBS, that's Macquarie Group, who must
be glad that Turncoat is no longer with them, and unlikely
to ever be in government! B^]
"The Macquarie Group was among the most optimistic of
the economists pooled in The Age survey, exceeded only
by Melbourne University economist Neville Norman, who
expects the economy to grow 1.2 per cent this year
followed by 2.5 per cent in the year to next June.
At the other end of the scale, University of Western
Sydney economist Steve Keen expects the economy to
contract 3 per cent this year and then contract a
record 6 per cent in the year to June.
In another encouraging sign, the Olivier Job Index,
due for release tomorrow, shows a levelling off in
the rate at which job vacancies are disappearing.
"It's too early to tell whether it's a trend," said
Olivier group director Robert Olivier. "But on this
evidence, the rate of decline is certainly decreasing
and the recruitment market stabilising."
The Australian Industry Group/Commonwealth Bank
Performance of Services Index moved into positive
territory for the first time in 14 months.
But Commonwealth Bank chief economist Michael Blythe
said it merely showed the service sector had "stopped
contracting" and "it is yet to move decisively into
expansion territory"."
Not bad for an economy that was experiencing the
burst housing bubble caused by Highrate Howard's
TWELVE SUCCESSIVE INTEREST RATE RISES, at precisely
the time a GLOBAL CREDIT CRISIS struck! Costello's
warnings about tough times ahead showed the tories
KNEW Global Credit was unwinding, but did NOTHING
to reduce interest rates in Australia or reduce
debt from the massive speculative bubble under
their 'leadership';

"The economists surveyed by The Age expect the unemployment
rate to climb from 5.7 per cent to 7 per cent by December.
The Bureau of Statistics will update the official
unemployment rate on Thursday."
Even the Bad News is not as bad as expected and nowhere
near as bad as the US and Europe!
Looks like Rudd and the ALP are firmly ensconced as
the Superior Economic Managers, outperforming the OECD,
and set for at least a second term in government.
Thanks to Malcolm the Slandering Spoiler the tories will
have to pull their heads in even to survive.
Expect a growth in the vote for the Greens and Third parties
at the cost of the Lieberals! B^]

THE number of Australians filing for bankruptcy and entering into other forms of
debt agreements has increased in the past three months, compared with this time
last year.
Figures published by the government agency Insolvency and Trustee Services
Australia yesterday show the number of bankruptcies, debt agreements and Part X
insolvency agreements between April and June rose 3 per cent, to 9437.
They also rose compared with the number reported between January and March. The
figures reflect rising unemployment, difficulty meeting loan repayments on
mortgages, credit cards and other personal debts, and business failures.
Bankruptcies, which usually make up about 75 per cent of all forms of
insolvency, were flat in the three months to June, at 7014. The number of NSW
residents filing for bankruptcy fell 9 per cent compared with last year, to
2532. NSW was still the nation's leader when it comes to bankruptcies, closely
followed by Queensland and Victoria.
The number of Part X agreements, which are seen as preferable to bankruptcy,
grew. There were 28 in NSW and 107 nationwide.

Any idiot can throw non-existent money at consumer spending and claim
'growth'. Just as any idiot can raise taxes to pay off a deficit.
The trick is to stimulate where it will do the most good - where it has
the greatest multiplier effect.
The evidence is that by throwing cash at people, he just blew away all
our recession-busting ammunition on plasma TVs. Fat lot of good that
will do. It just artificially boosts GDP in the least important
dimension - consumption. So he propped up a few jobs in Harvey Norman
and many more in China. BFD.
Notice that the "computers in schools" program will deliver only half
the computers promised and it's already $800-million over budget -
that's nearly double the original budget of $1b.
If the NBN goes the same way, we'll end up paying nearly $20,000 per
home or $400 per month for broadband. For what? A BSD contest with Telstra?

Gosh what a surprise! Here, you have earned a degree in stating the
bleeding obvious.
Do think it might be something to do with the Global Financial Crisis?

The one thing you can guarentee about economists is that they will be
wrong.
Unlikely. For example, in 12 years, when have NSW labour ever had a surplus?

I presume by NSW labour you are referring to the workers of NSW then
as major Australian taxpayers I would imagine that they have always
had a surplus.
Oh! perhaps you meant the NSW Labor Government? In that case NSW has
had a surplus since 1996. This is the first year it has been in
deficit since then.
I hope that helps.
You presume wrong.

Not really.

Yes I did didn't I? but then I made the mistake of assuming you were
literate and knew the difference between labour and Labor. Silly me.

I suspected not, you are probably beyond help.
I reckon you take the idea further on and start Camel Farms on every
Aborigenes' Reserves, and further PROCLAIM YOURSELF AS SOLE FEDERAL
TECHNICAL ADVISER TO THE CAMEL FARMERS & SOLE REFERENCE FOR FORMING
ABORIGENES INTO THE PROPER MANAGEMENT OF SUCH VENTURE !
Go ahead Mr Kanga with that project and take it to the Elders ... this
would be a marvelous boon for those poor people, which then will have
a purpose in life, an honour in creating their own income, and last
but not least something to transmit to their children !
AS FROM NOW I CONSIDER THAT EVERY FERAL CAMEL IN DESERT & RESERVES IS
AN INALIENABLE PROPERTY OF THE ONLY TRUE AUSTRALIANS TO WIT THE
ABORIGENES !
... AND MURDERING SUCH ANIMAL IN COLD BLOOD IS A DECLARATION OF WAR BY
THE WHITE INVADING SCUM AGAINST THE ABORIGENES PEOPLE AT LARGE
I HEREBY NAME MR MALCOLM FABIAN OF MT BARKER AS SOLE REPRESENTATIVE OF
ALL AUSTRALIAN ABORIGENES WITH VIEW TO SET UP CAMEL FARMS IN DESERT &
RESERVES, FOR THE SOLE BENEFIT OF THE AUSTRALIAN ABORIGENES AT LARGE
