CHRISTIAN BROTHERS (WA, 1996). AUS Catholic Church is ordered to pay
$3.5m compensation in NSW Supreme Court after 260 men file claims of
sexual abuse as boys between 1938 and 1976 in Christian Brothers
children's homes at BINDOON, CASTLEDARE, CLONTARF and TARDUN, WA.
Payments range from $2000 to $25,000. Lawyers claim church fought
"tooth and nail" and used "every trick in book" to avoid paying
compensation despite order's public admission of guilt. In 1996,
report claims more than 100 AUS Christian Brothers accused of abuse

"BEST Br Robert Charles, 55 (VIC, 1996). Ballarat Christian Brother,
primary school teacher, boarding master and principal. Receives
suspended 9 month jail sentence in Melbourne County Court after being
convicted on 6 charges of indecently assaulting 5 boys, aged 10 to 12,
between 1968 and 1973 while principal and grade 6 teacher at notorious
ST ALIPIUS' Christian Brothers primary school, Ballarat East, VIC.
Court hears Best, of Warrnambool, massaged buttocks of 1 boy, aged 11,
while making him recite Catholic catechism in class. Also twice abused
boy in 1971 at school's sick bay. Judge describes assaults as
"heinous, bizarre and repulsive". STORY. In 1998, Best receives
additional suspended 2 year jail sentence in Melbourne County Court
after being convicted of indecently assaulting 2 boys between 1969 and
1971 also at St Alipius'. Court told Best, now of Blackburn South,
fondled one victim's genitals while purporting to help with his work.

founder, Br Francis KEANEY, between 1948 and 1954 allegedly used
children, aged from 4 to 10, as slave labourers and made them work
long hours, often barefoot, on heavy construction projects before
brutally beating and flogging them for slightest infraction of rules.
Boys allegedly starved or forced to scavenge food from pig bins. In
1995, UK report exposes "culture of abuse" which existed at Bindoon
between 1940s and 1967, claiming AUS officials knew about treatment
almost from beginning. In 1996, 200 former residents take legal action
against CHRISTIAN BROTHERS, naming 40 brothers who allegedly abused

COOGAN John Patrick, 60 (VIC, 1994). Geelong lay Catholic school
teacher. Receives 5 year jail sentence in Geelong Magistrates Court
after pleading guilty to 17 charges of indecently assaulting boys,
aged 10 to 15, between 1962 and 1983 while physical education teacher
at St Joseph's Christian Brothers College, Newtown, Geelong, Bell Park
High School, Geelong, and North Geelong High School, VIC. Believed to
be one of VIC's heaviest sentences for indecent assaults. Court hears
Coogan, of Mermaid Waters, QLD, lured boys into office or gymnasium by
asking if they wanted extra training. Victims outside court claim
Coogan molested boys "100s of times" and that he described abuse,
sometimes during lunch breaks, as "our little tickle". For another

DENHAM Fr John Sidney, 58 (NSW, 2001). Hunter Valley Catholic priest
and Christian Brothers college chaplain, form master and discipline
master. Receives suspended 2 year jail sentence in Sydney Local Court
after being convicted on 2 charges of indecently assaulting student,
aged 14, in 1979 while priest at St Pius X College, Adamstown,
Newcastle, NSW. Court hears Denham, of Newcastle, was called on by
high school to act as confidant when sexual issues arose. Denham
transferred to Waverley Christian Brothers College, Sydney, after

DICK Br Gerard William, 67 (WA, 1994). Perth Christian Brother and
boarding master. Receives 3 year and 6 month jail sentence in Perth
District Court after pleading guilty to 10 charges of indecently
assaulting boy, aged 8 to 10, over 2 year period while boarding master
at CASTLEDARE Christian Brothers children's home, Perth, between 1960
and 1965. Court hears Dick, of Guilderton, north of Perth, beat,
punched and kicked boys and sexually abused them. Report says Dick
first Christian Brother charged with abusing young boys in WA
orphanages. Victim support group head outside court claims Dick also
"notorious" for beating and molesting boys at BINDOON, north of Perth,

DOWLAN Br Edward Vernon, 45 (VIC, 1996). VIC Christian Brother and
primary school teacher. Receives maximum 9 year and 8 month jail
sentence in Melbourne County Court after pleading guilty to 16 charges
of indecently assaulting 11 boys, aged 9 to 13, between 1971 and 1982
at St Patrick's College, Ballarat, Cathedral College, East Melbourne,
and St Thomas More College, Forest Hill, VIC. Court hears Dowlan
digitally raped one boy on 13th birthday and asked victim to thank
mother for him. Report says boy twice attempted suicide as result of
abuse and spent many years in psychiatric counselling. STORY. Priest
originally faced 76 sex charges, including committing unlawful sexual
intercourse and physical assault, against 25 children. Appeal reduces
sentence to 6 years and 6 months. Two assaults allegedly occurred at
notorious ST ALIPIUS' Christian Brothers primary school, Ballarat
East, in 1971. Court hears Dowlan molested one boy who went for help
and who was then sodomised by notorious pedophile priest, Fr Gerald
