T'is true. Your own "The Economist" says for example that
given two competing identical software products, one American
and the other Euro-Peon, that the Euro-peon customer will
usually give the American product more consideration.
This explains then why our software sales world-wide is
$100 BILLION, while the next runner-up is just a paltry
$10 Billion (UK & GDR combined)

Yes it does, but as it is but a mere percentage of some of the lowest
food prices in the developed world it's barely worth mentioning.
For example, for $20 (US) I can get from my local grocer:
2 lbs of Beef Loin ($2.40/lb)
2 lbs of Beef Strip Steak ($2.90/lb)
4 California avacados (0.80 ea)
2 heads California Romaine Lettuce (0.70/lb)
... and some other stuff I can't remember..
Taxes on this purchase ? Probably 10%.
If we Yanks are kinda ...um chubby this would be the
main reason: cheap & abundent food, available no

Freedom to join the communist party, freedom to be beaten up by racist
policemen, freedom to belive in and follow a corrupt administration,
freedom to set your nation up as a shinig beacon for all the world to
follow without actually looking at the rotten core and finding it's all
based on bullshit....
I could go on....
Yeah, that's why...
>Freedom to overthrow 25+ democratically elected government since WWII
"democratically elected" in a fairly broad sense of the word....
You say this as if we're the only nation to have ever overthrown
another government.
>Freedom to not visit Cuba
Except for the part that we own;)
>Freedom to have your nation crawling with spies (CIA, FBI, ATF, MOSAD)
As opposed to what nation???
>Freedom the let killers walk free (OJ)
Name a place where the guilty are always punshed and the innocent never
are. This is one (very high profile) murder trial.... I do agree that
our legal system needs to be changed, and jury trials are the problem.
>Freedom to be the only nation use nukes on innocent people
Because we had them first. If someone else had them first
(Russia, Germany) they would have used them on innocent people.
It was kinda hard at the time to use them without using them on
innocent people, we couldn't aim well then. We won't be the only forever.
>Freedom for only 5% of citizens to hold passport
Everyone here can hold a passport, but when it takes 60 hours or so
to drive from one corner to the other, many people don't need them.
When the next country is only a few hours away, it's different.
>Freedom to speed up exceutions to prove you are macho (Clinton)
>Freedom to lock up more people than China (1.5 million)
Okay, we have a lot of fucks in this country, more than we can lock up.
Some of them we kill too, so what?
>Freedon to 400,000 Iraqi's for oil
You're missing a verb here, kill? Yeah, and we started that one.
Those Iraqi were millitary, and that's what happens in armed confilict.
How many nations participated in that action?
>Freedom to have only right-wing parties
Uhh, nope, there's a communist party and a couple of other left-wingers
around, it's just that no one cares.
>Freedom to take care of Isreal through you imcome taxes
Something that most people here support, maybe you ought to read
up on how representative democracy works. Other countries give out
a lot of foreign aid too.
>Freedom to have never takening part in a electoral referndum
On the national level? Rare if ever. There are plenty of referendums
in CA every election, and most other states have them. Again, that's
what a representative democracy is.
>Freedom to have you entire political system run by corporations
Entire? Sounds like you have the freedom to use hyperbole. For that
matter, I wouldn't mind entirely if every government were replaced by
multinational corps, it would put a good dent in isolationism, ignorance,
bigotry, and war. Besides, that applies to other political systems
as well.

That's a basic human right

Hmm, all??? Nope, try again. Maybe you've been reading too many
newspapers or watching too much TV if you think that. For that matter,
is that worse than GOVERNMENT press that many countries still have?
Most of these things you have said have little to do with the
condition of freedom. They are criticisms of our society, and
some of them I see your point. But you seem to have the freedom
to use high profile media examples to set broad based generalizations
upon.

Oh, I just read in a subsequent post that you are Irish. I should have
known from the anti-Israeli and pro-communist (although you and I well
know that the communist party exists in the U.S., but most people don't
care for it) sentiment of your claims.
Let's talk the Freedoms of Ireland!
Freedom to be prohibited from getting an abortion!
Freedom to not having even the right to fly to England to get an abortion!
Freedom to not be anything other than Catholic unless you want to be bombed!
Freedom to express both pro-IRA-terrorism and pacifism sentiments in the
same breath!
Freedom from having one of the largest infanticide rates in the world (see
the first two freedoms for reason)!
Freedom to have your country lifted out of the poverty by the Deutschmark!
Freedom to proclaim that everyone on the planet loves you when really
everyone is sick and tired of you talking about how wonderful you are!
Freedom to think that the rest of the world really gives a shit that
northern Ireland is not part of your country!
Freedom to be anti-Israeli and anti-Jewish for absolutely no acceptable reason!
Freedom to think that the Palestinians love you because you taught them
the "art" of terrorism!
Freedom to stay married for the rest of eternity without a hope of a
divorce (until a few years ago)!
Freedom to bitch and whine about how you hate the Brits when you emulate
them in every way!
Freedom to proclaim what a stunning achievement that your people brought
Catholicism, the most corrupt religion on earth, back to continental
Europe! (millions of Jews and Muslims thank you!)

First off, I'm a yank...irish-american second. I've been to Ireland and
love it. If I had my way, I'd move there forever.
I feel many of the ills mentioned above are because of our Foreign
Policy. Many are quick to pounce on us when things are "peachy" in
there respective countries...but when there's a natural disaster or some
insane jackass decides he wants to invade your country who comes to your
aid? The United States of America. We've been bailing out other nations
since WW1. I think we should stop Foreign Aid completely...nada, zip,
ziltch...that way, we can feed the homeless and hungry right here at the
"rotten core" of our own society. If we took better care of our own,
we'd probably have a significantly lot less people in prison. I'm not
going to trash Europe, but I do recall a pints or so of U.S. blood was
shed trying to defend it some 50 + years ago. I'm not looking for a
payback, but a little respect is deemed worthy.
Again, if it was up to me not one U.S. dollar would be spent on anyone
but U.S. citizens. I'm tired of us policing the world. Why don't you
guys try it for once? I for one don't want to die just so you guys are
able to buy jeans. I'll fight for my homeland, but no one elses.

Get your facts straight, you little weasel! A couple of right-wing
politicians decided they were going to try to censor the internet, and
they've (too this point) failed miserably. If you want to denigrate the

I do not express any pro-IRA sentiments. I think what the have done for
the last 27 years is disgraceful as do most Irish people. And most Irish
people hold pacifist sentiments and why shouldn't they, war is needless in
all it's forms in the late 20th century as I hope most of the human race

> :Freedom from having one of the largest infanticide rates in the world

This has no basis in fact at all in fact Ireland has one of the lowest
infant death rates in the world on par or lower than most western
countries.
> :Freedom to have your country lifted out of the poverty by the Deutschmark!
Our country has not seen the poverty of most Third world countries since
the time of the Famine in the mid 1800's. The money Ireland has recieved
from the EU has helped to develop Ireland's infrastructure to be on par
with other European countries, this is the reason it was given. We were
not in poverty in 1973 when we joined the European Union we were just less
developed than most of the other countries in western Europe at the time.

Most people in Eire or the republic of Ireland don't want N. Ireland to be

the Irish government or the Irish people.

part" not mean anything. When you marry you make a commitment which you
should honor for the rest of your life, I personally was glad divorce came
into Ireland as bad matchs can happen but again in 1983 the majority
voted against divorce and we do live in a democracy but last year the
majority voted in favor so now we have divorce, you could get legally
separeted in Ireland but not remarry until the law changed.

I do not hate the Brits I hate bigots and idiots. I do not bitch about the
Brits. How do we emulate them please give the ways we do so I can answer
that.
> :Freedom to proclaim what a stunning achievement that your people

Yes Irish monks and pilgrams did help to bring Catholicism back to
continental Europe. This happened to be over a thousand years ago. A
religion cannot be corrupt only people are corrupt there are corrupt jews
and muslims and believers in other christian religions. There is no such
thing as a corrupt religion. Religion is only words. People never need a
reason to attack someone else who is different they just use religion as a
reason they would do it anyway. A reason only lets them sleep at night.
Now as for you yourself please look at your own views about the world and
it's people in particular and then put yourself in their shoes and then
look again at you views it might wake you up a little.

Oh, please save it. You're Irish, so of course you're anti-Zionist. I
have met dozens of Irishmen, and not a single one I've met hasn't expressed
anti-Zionism sentiments like you. (If you can find one that is not, I'd

Quid pro quo, Martin. Did you condemn the Irishman for making just as many

Yes, you are right, Igor. There are NO Americans that, until this day,
have admitted that the McCarthy era was disgusting, and that Native
Americans were murdered. YOU have brought this knowledge to us, and forced
us to face our contemptible past. And for that, we are eternally grateful.

I think the point is this: America claims to be the 'land of the free',
the hypocrisy of which prompted my first post. I did not, however, claim
that Europe was any better. We all have our skeletons in our collective
national closets, but we don't brag about being a haven for the sick,
poor, lonely masses, huddled or otherwise.
Besides, the 'freedoms of Ireland' that you quote above are the result of
bigoted papist *religion*, whereas the hypocrisy in America lies in the
constitution and the Declaration of independance. "We hold these truths
to be self-evident: that all men are created free (except commies, blacks
and native americans and any other oddities we decide to pick on)". I
think that was what Jefferson really meant.
(before anyone gets picky, I know communism hadn't been invented when the
Declaration was written, but you get my drift)

Stop trying to excuse your ignorant rant by blaming someone else! I didnt
read the comment from some Irish poster. I dont need to. All I need to do
is reply to your rant as it stands. It would be illogical to say all men
are rapists if a woman is raped by a man. Yet you still find, according to
one Irish poster, to say:
"Oh, I just read ... you are Irish. I should have known from the
anti-Israeli and pro-communist ... sentiment of your claims."
Since when are the Irish anti-Israeli and pro-communist???????????????????
This is surely the SCI Most Ignorant Fact of the Month! Please give me any
evidence to back up this ignorant statement. Dont waffle around, dont say
what others have opined, give me the fact to back up your statement.
I doubt you have any facts to back that up.
Prove it!!!!!!! C'mon...Prove it!!!!!! You cant! Cause you're wrong!
You even try to smear me by saying that I "express similar sentiments
about Americans", referring to the other Irish poster you mention. I think
you'll find I made some comments about two clowns who had expressed
ignorant comments (not as bad as yours I must admit). I think the US is a
great country, have many friends and relatives there, and visit it when I
can. You think all irish are anti-Israeli and Pro-communists!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unbelievable!!!!!!! So ignorant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well yes, sure to be sure I do have a comment.
This Jason chap is too true. The Catholic church
has a great hold over Ireland. The Americans have
no idea what they are talking about, I wished they
would keep their noses out of our troubles. It's
something that England and Irelands leaders must
sort out, not the common people.

Liar.
Iceland, Germany, Scotland, France, Denmark, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland all have
infant mortality rates much lower than Ireland (Eire).
If not for certain ethnic minorities, Australia and the US would also have lower rates.
As it is, Australia is on par with Eire.

of fascism where the majority DOESN'T count and we should all abide
be the vocal few , thats how the Nazi's came to power in germany!
People here don't dissapprove of abortion because a God says its
wrong , people dissapprove of it because they reckon it's wrong!
I voted FOR the abortion bill to pass incidently , I mightn't like
teh fact that it didn't get through but in a democracy that sort
of thing happens!

You're talking about the Pro-Life group and fair enough they are WAY
over the top , they march around town standing outside fast food
places with pictures of terminated embryos which are rotten ,
however don't seek to brand everyone with that label , also there
were other reasons for her barring order onthat , like her age!
In general it is quite possible for ANYONE to go over and get an
abortion , it isn't hugely expensive and only those on the lowest
level of the class system mightb't be able to afford it , but
could they afford it even if there was a clinic here?

Like the previous guy you are here assuming that the religion is
corrupt , its PEOPLE that are corrupt you fool!Fair enough the
catholic religion hasn't had a too sparkling past but thats because
some of the people who have practiced it have been very zealous
and that happens in EVERY religion , i refer your attention to
the current conflict in Algeria I think it is where over 300,000
people have been murdered as a result of Islamic fundamentalists
The list of things likethat van be applied to almost ALL religions!
So try to pry yourself away from your tunnel vision view of things!

Dear Spark,
I'm a fellow Yank and the reason I gotta see threads like:
Why people hate yanks...
Well, is because this country has an abundance of people who don't know
or won't admit the shite that happened and continues to happened.
(in.. this .. Great Land... (why do I always see that arse Richard Nixon
when I hear that line?)
Is America a Great Nation? - I say Ballocks - no better than any other.
The problem is we do have ignorant sods waving the flag in everybody
face - all the time spouting the 'my underwear is super super clean'
routine.
Cops are cops, politicians are politicians and who's ever drinking the
champagne will do anything (*anything*) to keep the status quo as is.
America, Poland - whatever.
Not ever?

You sure you don't mean Mars?!!
The civil rights movement (were you around then Sparks??!!! Let me tell
ya it wasn't pretty - and, gol---ly, it weren't long ago! How could you
miss that?)
Or Joe McCarthy??!!! If you were lucky you only lost the means to
support your family.
Or that dangerous drag-queen, Hoover!
Sorry, compadre - that's just the way it is. Plenty of people got jailed
and hosed in the country for their views.
Get your facts straight if you're going to bandy against the world as an
American representative.

Speaking of ignorance.... do you know what the word "infanticide" means?
Here's a couple of hints: Infant: Baby -cide: kill
Here's another hint: kill != die (or ~= or <> in other languages)
Still fumbling? Webster's Revised Unabridged
Infanticide (Page: 758)
In*fan"ti*cide (?), n. [L. infanticidium child murder; infans, -antis,
child + caedere to kill: cf. F. infanticide. See Infant, and Homicide.]
The murder of an infant born alive; the murder or killing of a newly
born or young child; child murder.
Infanticide (Page: 758)
In*fan"ti*cide, n. [L. infanticida: cf. F. infanticide.] One who
commits the crime of infanticide; one who kills an infant.

So name someone thrown in jail for speaking their mind in politics? Name
someone in the US who was jailed exclusively for criticizing the US
government. Just one name will do, and make it solid proof.

They were selling, snorting, or processing actual narcotics, you
fool...Big difference from speaking your mind on the subject, or
organizing political activity to change public opinion on it.
Here, I'll point it out to you in simple detail:
Everyone knows from childhood that selling or using narcotics w/o
license will get you thrown in jail. Just like everyone knows that
possessing, selling, or using high-explosives w/o a license will bear
the same consequences.
You are perfectly free to discuss either of the two to your hearts'
content. You are also free to work within the legal system the same as
everyone else to make either of the two legal and acceptable for sale or
use w/o a license to do so.

:Yes, we all lead a miserable life of sheeps. Get out while you can,
:Anorak, and pray for us that were not so lucky!
Nobody said you live horrible lives. But this is a fact that America is
not and never has been a democratic nation. The country has always been
operated for the benefit of the internatial merchantile interests. For
instance, the famous Wall Street firms like JP Morgan, Kidder Peabody
and Goldman Sachs made their great profits through slavery and the opium
wars. Many of the founders of these banks were European who went to
America because salvery was deemed immoral in Europe and they saw their
business going under. So they moved to a country that had no problem
with things like human rights. After the slave and opium trades dried up
the bankers ordered the US government to killed the indians and this is
when the moved into beef and railroads and started to get "respectable".
AS for AMericans living well sure they do, because the banking and
financial sector thrived during this century and so did the Americans.
However, when it goes down like in 1929 the average American suffers
more that any other citizen on earth because their government is under
no obligation to see them as anything other than highly-developed farm
animals. Because the US government only needs humans within their
borders to eserve as biped worker ants for the ruling classes.
During the great depression people in places like Oklahoma and West
Virginia were eating dogs and cats to survive. This result was that the
American communist movement becomes the fastest growing political party
in the USA. If it was not for the clever man named FDR, the USA would be
a communist state today. He insitituted the system of social security
and many other socialist ideas and saved the bankers of Americna from
ruin at the hands of an angry public.
The American cannot accept any of these facts because he has been told
from birth that his country was founded by the right hand of God. It is
too painful to admit that the drafters of glorious US constitution which
Americans believe is a sacred doument openly refered to African
Americans and Natives as livestock.
America will die soon between the over zealous ultra-right wing
government enacting incredible anti-civiil rights laws coupled with the
unservcible national debt - it is doomed. I feel soory for the Americans
because when the shit hits the fan then they will really see what their
government really thinks of them.

The US spends next to nothing abroad. What it does spend is almost
all
to promote its interests.
The US imports more goods than it exports. The US has the highest
national debt of any country in the world (based on size, GNP and
population). We all police the world, it's just that the US likes to
stick its nose in when it's plainly not needed. Who the fuck asked for
America's help in ireland?

The US is in arrears in its contributions to the UN.

they start commiting crimes) are criminals nothing more nothing less. Some
poor sap in the inner city who kills his neighbor for his shoes, is this
person deserve political prisoner status?
Now when we talk about the issue of decriminalizing narcotics is something
different.
Example.
A poor sap who does not do drugs but gets sent to jail for advocating
decriminalizing narcotics is a political prisoner.
A guy who gets put away for pushing 20 grams of coke a day is a criminal
(until the laws change).
Using your thought it may be claimed that KKK guys in jail for lynching blacks
are political prisoners. Are you going to argue that?
>Freedom to be anti-Israeli and anti-Jewish for absolutely no acceptable reason!
Anti-Zionist, more usually. The Irish tend to sympathise with underdogs.
Are there acceptable reasons not cited by Irishmen?

We're tired of your governments' policing the world too, so why not give
it up? You'd be amazed at how little we need it and how much we'd
appreciate it if you would. But try persuading your government to give
it up and see how far you get. I agree with you about government to
government foreign aid. The only beneficiaries of that money are corrupt
politicians and their hangers-on.
Why don't *we* try it, you ask? We don't try it because we don't think
we've got the world's entire fund of moral righteousness on our side, as
some of your more aggressive politicians and "policemen" seem to think
they have.
No offense meant to the many good American people who also see their
government's policies abroad for what they are.

I think Dave's being a bit unfair here. First of all, you're wrong about
the national debt thing, cause national debt is played against GDP and it
happens to be more than $6 trillion a year. But besides that, many
Americans aren't too fired up about spending billions of dollars to stock
bases in South Korea and Japan. Yes, you can make an argument that it is in
our interests to have bases over there, but the argument falls down when
you consider that the money is needed to battle problems here. If American
troops pulled out of South Korea tomorrow, there would be a war the next
day, sure as shit. If they were to be pulled out of Japan, an arms race
never seen since W.W.II would be under taken in that part of the world the
following week.
I ask you David, what does the average American get out of this? As I'm
sure you're well aware, South Korea and Japan have extremely closed
economies. Having men and women risking their lives there gets the United
States nothing in terms of trade.
There is a European country that the United States definitely doesn't
belong in: Bosnia, or whatever it happens to be called today. Could you
enlighten me as to what the U.S. gains by spending billions of dollars and
by sending American men and women in harms way there? Is it worth it to the
average American.
On the question of keeping out of Ireland's and England's long-standing
dispute, I couldn't agree more. Blame it on that idiot we have in the White
House. One of the morons who advise him probably said he could score major
points with Irish-American voters if he stuck his nose in it. Thank God
he'll be gone soon. (But not soon enough)

Still, the US has a set of written rights that are defended by
organizations like the ACLU before the Supreme Court. It's idiotic to
claim that the US's shortcoming's 20 or more years ago are evidence for
it's shortcoming's today.
Ireland and the UK did because the US is the home of the largest Irish
diaspora on the planet.
The last thing on earth the US wants is to get involved in other
countries. Read your history. The US is quintessentially isolationist.

Not in some democracies - like the US, where the Supreme Court has found that their
constitution protects a woman's right to control her own fertility.

I guess you'll just have to stop leeching off of our doomed economy,
then.
We're damned if we do, and damned if we don't. If we don't go off to
try to impose peace and save the little guy, we're irresponsable with
our power and inhumane, if we do we're meddling in internal affairs.
Before we entered in Bosnia, we had Bosnians and churches lobbying our
government to intervene, that it was our responsibility as a great
power to stop the genocide.... and of course we were also told that
it was a European problem and the European nations could solve it.
Well, we stayed away. They were wrong.
If we pulled in all of our carrier groups that have been providing
a stabalizing force throughout the world, particularly the far east,
do you really think things would continue on as before? I understand
being sick of order being imposed from outside, but would you really
want that support to suddenly collapse?
Why are we interested? Why are we involved? Peace, stability, and
democracy serves our interest (and we feel everyone's interest...)
for one. Beyond that, there are groups of Americans from every
country, and the numbers may not always be large, but when war threatens
your homeland, you're going to call your Senator and try to get some
help. Living in the US, you know that our millitary can help, the
only question is a matter of will.
....a troll by any other name - is still Eccles.

documents as LAW!

A perfect example of how the corrupt federal government serves itself and
is no longer a government OF THE PEOPLE BY THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE!
People like Clinton think that people were *created* for the government.
That humans are raw materials for beureacracy to use and abuse as it sees fit.

And you believe that abortion is a civil right simply because someone
told you so. What is essentially religious in the nature of this
question? Basically, if you believe a fetus is a human being then to
kill it is wrong. If you don't believe that then you have a basis for
your position. I object to "the likes of YOU" turning an intellectual

Why don't you take a look at your history. I seem to remember a story
about a city named Fez where the streets ran red with the blood of
Christians at the hand of the Muslims. Christians don't have a monopoly
on atrocities, you simplistic anti-Christian bigot. You seem entirely

I have a small suggestion. Next time you presume to quote the
Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the U.S. to make your
point, you actually read them first. Saves you embarrassing mistakes
like this.

Uhh, reality check time.... the depression that started in '29 and
persisted throughout the 30's was a worldwide phenomonon. It affected
Germany rather badly in particular, but certain European powers saw
it as a just punishment. Money became useful as wall coverings, because
it was cheeper than wallpaper, and that persisted until a political
change that took place led to a rather bloody war.
"Any other citizen on earth?" That's not true even in the Western
world, and it's simply ridiculous to suggest that it is true for
citizens of developing nations... or don't they count?

Not necessarily. There are plenty of circumstances under which I believe killing a

Even if I did, I doubt that I would oppose abortion on demand.

Which country are you from, "Igor"? Or would admission open a whole can of
worms? By the way, *Italy* is part of your beloved *EU*.

Because the Dutch are incompetent buffoons. Does the Irish Republic exist now?

The determination of the beginning of life is an essential religious
question. In my interpretation, you are not alive until you can live on
your own outside your mother's body, which means the last trimester at
least. If you're going to argue that conception (a charged concept in the
Catholic church) is the beginning of life, then are you going to argue
against the shedding of skin? plastic surgery? Scottish researchers have
proven that we can potentially create life from those cells also...

I personally have no problem with these above sentiments....that is, if the
person actually *does* leave America. Otherwise, they make themselves look
like pathetic hypocrites.
