Claire Danes might want to take a few
public speaking classes next semester
at Yale. The 19-year-old
actress-turned-freshman is being
sharply criticized for comments she
made about Manila, where she filmed
her upcoming movie Brokedown Palace.
In fact, some in the Philippines capital are so upset
that
the city is considering banning all of Danes' movies,
reports the Associated Press. "She painted a surreal
picture of Manila," says Kim Atienza, a city councilor
and
son of the mayor.
Danes, who in the film plays one of two friends jailed
after unwittingly attempting to smuggle heroin out of
Bangkok, told Vogue that Manila was a "ghastly and
weird city." Atienza says the Manila city council, which
will vote next week on whether to put the kibosh on
Danes' films, dismissed those comments as "mere
irresponsible statements of youth." But that was before
the Romeo and Juliet star went "overboard" in an
interview with Premiere, says Atienza.
Danes, who appears on the cover of the latest issue of
the
movie mag, said the city "smelled of cockroaches, with
rats all over and that there is no sewage system, and
the
people do not have anything—no arms, no legs, no eyes."
"Those are irresponsible, bigoted, and sweeping
statements that we cannot accept," says Atienza, who
pointed out that many of the scenes for Brokedown
Palace were shot inside a crumbling psychiatric
hospital.
"Didn't she know that what she saw there is not
representative of Manila?" Atienza asks. "We cannot stop
her from coming back because that is a diplomatic
decision. But we can stop theaters in Manila from
showing her films."
Danes has not commented on the criticism, but Jun
Juban, who worked as a producer on the Philippine part
of the shoot, was quoted as saying, "I cannot apologize
for Ms. Danes' acerbic tongue. I can only hope she
chokes on it."
Brokedown Palace is due out on Feb. 26.
Manila...isn't that the place where you can get a girl for $1.45? Or is that
Bangkok? Forgot which...

She's not a foreign head of state -- she's a teenager, potentially
"spoiled" with limited knowledge of different lifestyles -- even though
her opinion is crass, it's still her opinion and observation, and just
that.
Foreign visitors touring impoverished areas of Chicago or New York City
might provide similar commentary.
I've visited rural locales in Southeast China where my mother is from
where there was no sewage system other than those "squating toilets" and
open gulleys along the side of the street, kids played with giant
waterbugs with the legs of the insects attached to strings, there were
some rodents here and there, as well as a few oxen. The people were
regular homebodies, kitchens and furnaces burned coal tablets for fuel,
there was no violent crime, people didn't walk around saying "fuck you"
to strangers in response to minor traffic infringements, a tastey
spaghetti meal cost 25 cents U.S., and it was still a nice place to live
and hang out.
I remember from my childhood in Taipei an open gulley where children
(about 4 and under) used to pee. It was a terrible smell if you got too
close, but I didn't think much of it -- it was there -- and I was too
busy throwing rocks at the wall lizards and giant snails in the garden.

So if you loved Barney the dinosaur, you'd respect his opinion about
nap time?
