Obituary Summary:
Hideo Sasaki of Lafayette, a landscape architect, planner
and educator, passed away at a Walnut Creek hospital
Wednesday of cancer at 80. He was born Nov. 25, 1919,
in the small San Joaquin Valley town of Reedley. He
graduated from the University of Illinois and received
a master's degree in landscape architecture from the
Harvard Graduate School of Design. Mr. Sasaki taught
at the University of Illinois and at Harvard. Mr. Sasaki
founded Sasaki Associates Inc., a Massachusetts
architectural firm that has worked on landscapes for
Stanford Library, The Chronicle Pavilion in Concord,
the grounds of Foothill College and Walt Disney World
in Florida. Mr. Sasaki did landscaping for the University
of Arizona, University of Colorado, IBM, and San
Francisco's Embarcadero Center. In 1961, Mr. Sasaki was
appointed to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts and
served until 1971. At the 100th anniversary celebration
of Harvard's landscape architecture department this past
April, Mr. Sasaki was awarded the Centennial Medal for
his impact on landscape architecture at the Harvard
Design School, the American Society of Landscape
Architects Medal and Allied Professions Medal from
the American Institute of Architects.
