I was having a discussion on rec.autos and the issue came up which is
preferred Asian vs. Oriental and of course not many people there knew.
They only know about manual transmissions. Someone suggested to ask
here.

I looked for headers on the subject but it is probably old news.

so if you would indulge me.

Which word is preferred?
By Asian Americans or English Speaking residents of Asia or Both
What are the reasons that Oriental is no good? That is the part I
have wondered about. I thought I would come across this . .
information somewhere without looking but that might take forever.
This only extends to people? oriental art, oriental culture,
oriental names, oriental noodles (which I see at the grocery), good or
bad?

I promise no flames in return.

Time does not permit me to read this ng, so if you could write me at
mei...@erols.com I would appreciate it.

At least, that's what I've gathered...

In the US, we're not as partial toward "Oriental" because it seems to be a
term that was popularized during the Imperialist Era, whereas "Asian" is
much more accurate, geographically. Besides, by "Oriental", you mean
"East". And that would depend. East of where? Compared to the US, the
Pacific Rim region of Asia is toward the West. Comapred to the UK, it is
the "Far East".

In the US, we tend to reserve "Oriental" for objects and "Asian" for
people.

White-washed whores prefer "Asian"; proud Asians like myself don't care.
