JERUSALEM, July 2 (Reuters) - Amnesty International said on Thursday
Israel inflicted "wanton destruction" in the Gaza Strip in attacks that
often targeted Palestinian civilians during an offensive in December and
January in the Hamas-run enclave.

The London-based rights group, in a 117-page report on the 22 days of
fighting, also criticised the Islamist movement Hamas for rocket attacks
on Israel, which it called "war crimes".

Among other conclusions, Amnesty said it found no evidence to support
Israeli claims that Gaza guerrillas deliberately used civilians as
"human shields", but it did, however, cite evidence that Israeli troops
put children and other civilians in harm's way by forcing them to remain
in homes taken over by soldiers.

Amnesty International said some 1,400 Palestinians were killed in
Israel's Operation Cast Lead, including 300 children and hundreds of
innocent civilians, a figure broadly in line with those from the
Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza and the independent Palestinian Centre
for Human Rights.

The Israeli military put the Palestinian death toll at 1,166 of whom 295
were civilians. Thirteen Israelis were killed, including three
civilians, during the offensive Israel launched with the declared aim of
curtailing cross-border rocket attacks.

Accusing Israel of "breaching laws of war", Amnesty said: "Much of the
destruction was wanton and deliberate, and was carried out in a manner
and circumstances which indicated that it could not be justified on
grounds of military necessity."

Commenting on Amnesty's allegations, the Israeli military said it
operated in accordance with international law. It said the report
ignored "efforts made by the Israel Defence Forces to minimise, as much
as possible, harm to non-combatants".

"In many cases, the Israel Defence Forces exercised measures of caution,
including warning the civilian population before an attack," the
military said. "The Israel Defence Forces directed its attack only
against military targets."

A Hamas spokesman said the Amnesty report did not place enough emphasis
on "crimes committed by Israel".

"This report equates between the aggressor and the victim and ignores
international laws that guarantee resistance against occupation," the
spokesman said.

U.N. INQUIRY

Israel and Hamas have both rejected accusations of war crimes during the
Gaza fighting. Israel has refused to cooperate with a United Nations
inquiry that is now gathering evidence, accusing the investigators of
prejudice against it.

Amnesty said although rockets fired by Palestinian militants from the
Gaza Strip rarely cause casualties, their use was "indiscriminate and
hence unlawful under international law". The rockets often sow fear and
panic.

It also accused Hamas and other armed groups of endangering the lives of
the Palestinian civilian population in Gaza by firing rockets and
locating military equipment near homes.

The report however dismissed Israeli claims that Hamas had used
Palestinian civilians as "human shields".

Amnesty said it found no evidence that "Hamas or other armed groups
forced residents to stay in or around buildings used by fighters, or
that fighters prevented residents from leaving buildings or areas which
had been commandeered by militants".

But the report said in several cases Israeli soldiers used Palestinian
civilians, including children, as "human shields, endangering their
lives by forcing them to remain in or near houses which they took over
and used as military positions".

You really aren't comprehending what I wrote, fella. Amnesty
International *ALSO* condemned Hamas for the war crime of illegally
firing rockets at Israel.

Apparently you haven't been paying attention to world news reports about
the Gaza offensive and you're too fucking stupid and bigoted against
Palestinians to consider that Israel, with its far superior weaponry and
overwhelming force, *ALSO* committed war crimes but on a much larger scale.

Another idiot who fails to see the whole picture and simply doesn't
'get' it.

Historically going back to Biblical times as a nation, Israel never HAS
been able to get along with its neighbors - most likely because they
have carried this arrogant bullshit notion that they are the "'chosen'
people of God" and are somehow superior to all other peoples.

That kind of thinking always leads to a justifiable rude awakening,
particularly since they've used their overwhelming superior military
force to abuse and oppress others, incrementally encroaching on more and
more of their lands.

Like I said, it looks to me like the world and the USA is just about fed
up with Israel's decades long brutal occupation by the vastly superior
military of the Israelis and their continuous encroachment into and
extensive seizing of more and more land against previous agreements -
and their record-breaking number of violations against UN resolutions.

Aha, can't compete in the last 100 years, eh? The time shift to
near-geological time scale.

The Arabs claim Israel is their land. That claim is far from undisputed.
They seem to think that because they don't dispute it themselves, that
it is undisputed. But it is disputed by some pretty strong facts and
arguments, and it has been disputed on the world stage for years.

There are two ways in civilized international rules to resolve a dispute
-- negotiation and war. Whether war is civilized or not is moot, the
rules of it are commonly referred to as the "civilized rules of war".

The Arabs have tried war, three times in fact. This has apparently not
resolved the issue to their satisfaction. During these wars, they lost
undisputed claim to some more land that is now so evidently disputed by
them and the Israelis.

The Arabs have tried negotiation several times. Egypt and Jordan's deals
aside, it has not been all that successful. It did not resolve the issue
to their satisfaction, their stated aim being -- many times, from many
groups, in many forums -- the destruction of Israel.

They were so incompetent at this, as a matter of fact, that they became
to some extent the butt of jokes worldwide. This was of course seen as
an insult, but didn't cause them to look at their own faults. Oh, no.
They blamed Israel and by proxy the US.

Clinging doggedly to their persistent belief that the disputed land was
undisputedly theirs, and civilized means of dispute resolution having
failed them, they turned to uncivilized means. They invented modern
terrorism, and all of a sudden people were not laughing.

This uncivilized approach takes the form of the basic threat:

Give us what we want, *all* we want, or we will kill your
innocent people.

In the civilized world this is breaking the law of extortion. If the
threats of murder are carried out, it is murder and extortion which
combined we call racketeering or gangsterism.

Terrorism is a word adopted to represent gangsterism on an
international scale.

Israel is the good guys. The Arabs as personified by their leaders are
the bad guys. To me it is that simple.

Why anyone would favor a bunch of corrupt Arab sheiks over a free
people like the Israelis, I will never know.

Repeated assertion doesn't make a fact.

Israel provably didn't encroach on anything. The Arabs attacked, and
lost land as a result. Had they minded their own business, they would
have Gaza and the West Bank. Not to mention 78% of the land which is
undisputably Israel today. Israel would have been one-tenth the area

UN General Assembly resolutions -- completely meaningless. 120 cannibals
and 40 missionaries voting on what's for dinner.

The Arabs, on the other hand, are in complete contradiction of the most
basic UN tenet -- the Human Rights Declaration.

Your anti-Arab bigotry and one-sided bias is undeniable. There is NO

So? In your little world, Is the side in a conflict that loses the
most necessarily the good guy?

P.S. Why do all you airheads crosspost to so many irrelevant groups?

Yet you don't deny it with facts.

If and when the Palestinians get a state, they will be so insecure as to
make reliance on their promises ridiculous.

The Palestinians have zero prospect of creating a bright and vital state
on their own. They have completely alienated the only viable trade
partner they have, Israel, and they rely on handouts to keep themselves
going. Their attempts at governing themselves after Oslo resulted in
rampant corruption and the disintegration of their people's safety and
security. They conduct themselves in a manner completely undeserving of
respect, brainwashing their children to commit brutal crimes in the name
of their religion.

The Palestinians have no leaders worthy of the name, for worthy
leaders know that the peace and prosperity of their people is their
responsibility. The ones they have have thrown three generations of their
children down the toilet, and they are working on the fourth. That was
the inevitable result of educating their children in hate and loudly
proclaiming the goal of the destruction of Israel.

When disintegration of the Palestinian economy inevitably happens
after a peace agreement, the forces of radical Islam can easily take
control with immense risk that they will abrogate and abdicate any
Palestinian promises.

Israel on the other hand has 50 years of stable government to prove the
validity of their promises.

I am absolutely amazed that people expect the promises of both to be
taken at face value. You don't give whiskey and car keys to a
16-year-old boy, and that is what sovereignty over any territory is for
the Palestinians. If they can get a limited state and then build some
reasonable history of action, that can change. But they have zero track
record. It would be like believing the promise of a drug addict that
they will stop taking drugs. They may mean it at that very moment, but
the addiction will take control shortly thereafter.

> There is NO world court that accepts that Israel has complete
> sovereign ownership of the territories in question.

There is no world court. If there were a real one, it would try and
convict the Arabs for repeatedly attacking it's neighbor. 1948, 1967,
1973, and continuing guerilla warfare since.

Israel has never had a chance to get along with its neighbors -- its
neighbors keep attacking it. If it attacked them, then you could claim
it was the driver. But it hasn't. It has been attacked, repeatedly.

I'm done with you. Not only don't you fail to provide any evidence
for your repeated claims, you just ignore telling points presented by
others. You can do nothing but make assertion after assertion, with
no evidence.

You react like the intractable biased bigot that you are. The *degree*
of your bigotry is astounding. It's no surprise at all. It's people like
you who perpetuate the conflict and prevent any FAIR solution.

As I've said, in my view, Israel is going to HAVE to learn get along
with its neighbors and the world community or it will inevitably get the
disastrous ass-kicking it's inviting.

You sound like a Jr High drop out, Duke. What you write confirms what an

While you were looking, possibly you noted that there isn't anyone here that
doesn't think you are a full no-wit, jm.
