A 28-year-old San Juan Capistrano man who killed a cellmate
while both were awaiting trial for separate murder cases was
sentenced Tuesday, Jan. 31, to 11 years in prison.

On Monday, Brion Cairo Hyde had admitted to his role in two
separate slayings, pleading guilty to first-degree murder for
the 2016 love-triangle killing of Alvaro Rios in a San Juan
Capistrano creek bed, and voluntary manslaughter for the 2020
jailhouse killing of Kirk Price at the Theo Lacy Facility in
Orange.

While Hyde pleaded guilty to both killings, his sentencing for
the Price slaying was delayed a day so prosecutors could give
Price’s family a chance to attend the hearing.

Unlike the sentencing a day earlier in the Rios killing — where
more than a dozen family members filled the courtroom and a half-
dozen spoke before the judge — no family members of Price
attended Tuesday’s hearing.

As part of Hyde’s plea deal, the 11-year sentence for Price’s
slaying will run concurrently with the 25-years-to-life term he
received on Monday for killing Rios, a Perris resident. As a
result, Hyde’s sentence for the jail killing won’t lengthen his
time behind bars.

Hyde was arrested in 2016 after investigators identified him as
the ringleader of a group of a five men and a women who took
part in some fashion in Rios’ death. While awaiting trial for
that killing, Hyde ended up in a cell with Price.

Earlier that year, authorities said, Price walked into the OC
Boxing MMA Academy in Tustin and shot to death owner Fahness
Lutalo. Longtime friends, Price became jealous of Lutalo’s
success, some who knew the two pair said after the killing. As a
third-striker, Price was facing up to 100 years to life in
prison if convicted of Lutalo’s killing.

In January 2020, Orange County Sheriff’s Department officials
announced Price had died from injuries sustained a month earlier
in a jailhouse fight. No further details were released at the
time; Hyde wasn’t publicly identified as the killer.
