The myth of black inventions

It seems to me that the widely-posted lists showing "original" black
inventions are very misleading. Common sense and a look at African
nations today tells me that the majority are probably just additions
or improvements to existing designs.

I don't doubt that blacks have contributed some good inventions,
but I'm sure whoever made the following list took great liberties with
the truth to promote multiculturalism and to inspire young black
students. There's nothing wrong with that sort of inspiration, but it
needn't be deceptive.

Ask yourself if you really think everything here (even 90% of it) was
never seen on the planet in any form until a black person invented
it. I'd like to know if a thorough examination of each claim exists
somewhere. A DejaNews power search for 'cannads hornell list' locates
one good criticism. The rotary engine was invented by Felix Wankel,
and Elisha Otis had a working elevator long before Alexander Miles'
design. I suspect most of the claims below follow that pattern. To
equate a modification with a unique "invention" is plain dishonest.
